A Deli As It’s Done On DeLancey

Newtown resident Stanley Hochman has delivered New York style deli cuisine to Newtown this week with the grand opening of DeLancey Street – a restaurant, delicatessen and catering service. The business opened Tuesday at 79 South Main Street (the old site of Anne’s Red Brick Coffee House).

As Mr Hochman explains, DeLancey Street in lower Manhattan is famous for its kosher and kosher-style delis. In New York, there are four types of delis – German, Italian, kosher-style and kosher. However, in Connecticut, he said, there is only one type of deli - Italian. DeLancey Street is considered a kosher-style deli, which, according to Mr Hochman, provides the best of all worlds.

“This is a true New York style deli,” Mr Hochman said proudly as he prepared his meats for the opening. “We serve Hebrew National products. We steam our corned beef, pastrami and brisket the old fashioned way. It tastes juicier.”

Mr Hochman has been in the business for 36 years, having owned delis in Long Island and Bridgeport. He still runs a kosher catering business in the “Park City.”

At DeLancey Street, which is also a full-service restaurant, everything is made on the premises. Of course, customers can expect to pick up grinders packed to the gills with meat and other toppings. Earlier this week, Mr Hochman pulled out a chicken cutlet from the fridge that looked bigger than some chickens. Rest assured, the lunch crowds will get their fill. And the prices aren’t bad either. A hot corned beef or roast beef grinder from “Stan’s 4-Star” deli board is just $5.25. The menu also includes burgers, hot dogs, salads, Philly cheese steaks and fried chicken.

But DeLancey Street also specializes in the harder-to-find treats such as assorted knishes, kasha varniskas, and stuffed derma. The extensive menu also includes such delights as Portobello mushrooms, sweet and sour stuffed cabbage and knockwurst. There are Bella’s Breakfast Delights and a mouth-watering array of desserts – apple strudel, seven layer cake, and, of course, New York cheese cake. There is also a kids’ menu.

Mr Hochman is in partnership with his son, Jay, and has received a helping hand from his fiancée Sandi Lubin, a longtime Newtown resident.

DeLancey Street is open Monday through Friday 6 am to 5 pm, and Saturday 7 am to 4 pm.
