Newtown High School's girls' soccer team continued its unbeaten ways to begin the season with a 5-2 triumph over visiting New Milford, at Treadwell Park, on October 3. Newtown, which wore pick uniforms in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, improved to 8-0-1.

As dominant as the performance may look on paper, the Nighthawks actually struggled to put their opponents away. The Green Wave, in fact, scored first, early in regulation. Newtown didn't get on the scoreboard until late in the opening half, and the game was tied at halftime. After Newtown seized the lead early in the second half, The Wave hit the crossbar on a bid to again tie the score and continued to apply pressure on the Nighthawk defense.

The Nighthawks scored four times in the second half and built a 5-1 lead before New Milford got the final net-finder.

Carly Swierbut netted a hat-trick, Kaley Meisenheimer scored twice and had an assist, Sarah Houle assisted two goals, and Sydney Howard added an assist.

Although Coach Marc Kenney was pleased with his squad for piling up scoring chances, he said the Nighthawks should have put the game out of reach much earlier.

"The priority for us has to be finishing. I think ten minutes in it could have been two or three nothing," said Kenney, adding that strong goalkeeping by New Milford played a role, but added "we didn't help ourselves."

This young and mostly inexperienced team is off to a tremendous start and Kenney is encouraged by both the results and scoring opportunities the offense is generating.

"We're getting chances so that is a good thing," Kenney said.

"I think there's a lot of potential to be really good," said captain Grace Corcoran, adding, "there's always room for improvement with this group."

In a September 28 visit to Weston, Newtown settled for a 2-2 tie. Houle and Emma Curtis scored. Janyce Toth played in goal and had seven saves.
