Appalled By Lack Of Support For LOF
This letter addressed to First Selectman Pat Llodra was received for publication in The Newtown Bee.
Dear Selectman Llodra:
It has come to my attention that the town of Newtown has revoked its offer for LOF Adaptive Skiers to use the promised property at Walnut Tree Hill Field. This decision was based on erroneous information and falsehoods. I attended the meeting that was recently held and I could not believe what I was hearing from these few, angry people. It was clear to me that a decision by the board had already been determined.
These few, angry people had not even turned in the required paperwork prior to the meeting. They handed it to the board as they started to spew their hostilities towards LOF and its members. Gross negligence on their part and the board's part for accepting the late paperwork.
The board caved in to the ridiculous lies that were perpetrated by a few residents who believe they own the water. I could not believe what I was hearing from the townspeople. It was truly despicable and all lies.
As a wheelchair user, I cannot express how this group has lifted me up and filled my life with a purpose. If it was not for Joel and his amazing staff of volunteers, I would not be the person I am today. I am now working toward becoming a competitive sit-skier and helping others find their way after suffering from life-changing circumstances.
I have seen firsthand the benefits of this organization. In the past 25 years they have changed more lives for the better than you can imagine.
I remember that awful day when a terrible tragedy was perpetrated upon your town and school. The entire country stood strong with you. Donations flooded in to help the "Fine" people of Sandy Hook/Newtown who were impacted by this callous waste of life.
I was one of those people who felt compelled to donate and do my part to help the town try and move on and lift itself up.
As I was appalled then, I am appalled now, at the way the town is not supporting LOF at a site that is completely suitable for their mission due to a few neighbors who are doing everything within their power to not pay it forward. I find this to be disgraceful, heartless, and unacceptable.
Gosh forbid, If one of your family members every was in my position, I know you would do everything within your power to make sure that he/she would be given the opportunities that Joel and LOF has given to countless challenged individuals.
Frankly, you ought to be ashamed of yourself going back on promises that you made.
Perhaps it is time to stop being a lemming and help others, as others have helped you.
Sincerely,
Caren Landis
