F. Patrick McCarthy

One of the region's most accomplished artisans, antique furniture restoration

specialist F. Patrick McCarthy, 47, of 419 Old Sherman Hill Road in Woodbury,

died of cancer August 20 at Waterbury Hospital. He was the husband of Virginia

Quinn McCarthy.

"In all his endeavors," antiques dealer and friend Tucker Frey said, "Pat

achieved the highest level of success. As a craftsman and cabinetmaker he was

esteemed by the most famous collectors and dealers in the country. He was a

collector of Americana and a connoisseur of fine food, music, and the arts.

Pat was receptive to learning about everything: guns, tools, clocks, textiles,

and paintings. Above all, he was a great husband, friend, and humanitarian."

Mr McCarthy was born on July 14, 1952 in Harwinton, the son of Winona

(Babineau) and the late Francis P. McCarthy. After graduating from Southern

Connecticut State University with a degree in social work, he ran a group home

for troubled juveniles in Bridgeport. When passions for the country life and

hand craftsmanship beckoned, Mr McCarthy began to build houses and later

learned the art of antique furniture restoration. He worked for a time at

Woodbury's Mill House Antiques before launching his own restoration business.

Dennis Caron, one of Mr McCarthy's employees, described him as a generous,

ingenious, and often demanding boss. "When Pat put his mind to solving a task,

however impossible it seemed, he always figured out a way to get it done. He

was a good teacher, a man of vision. His name is still attached to every job

we do."

"You always knew where you stood with Pat," said longtime friend Bill Boucher.

"He was a straight-talking man - funny, sensitive, spiritual, with a gift for

telling stories."

A handsome man, Pat McCarthy met his wife in the fall of 1978. They lived

every day in love. "Pat always saw things from the humane side," Ginny

McCarthy said. "He treated people in a special way. He had great reverence for

- and knowledge of Á nature, and he loved his town, Woodbury."

Together with his wife, he built and furnished an eighteenth century-style

home in Woodbury and a cabin in the Adirondacks. He treasured his family and

his numerous friends. Pat McCarthy never had a bad word to say about anyone.

Woodbury Classical furniture specialist Rebekah Clark summed up her friend as

"tall, strong, and true."

Besides his wife, Pat McCarthy leaves his mother and stepfather, Winona and

Harold Palmer of Bristol; two sisters, Mary Jane Febbroriello of Harwinton and

Cindy Tazzara of Winsted; and seven nieces and nephews.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 2 pm on Saturday,

August 28 at North Congregational Church, Main Street North, Woodbury.

The Woodbury funeral home of Munson-Lovetere, Main Street South, is in charge

of arrangements.
