SNAPSHOT: JESSE MAKLES

Occupation: I am the manager of the Newtown Grand Union. As of next week, I am

going to be the manager of the new Danbury store at exit 2 off I-84. I have

been with the company for 34 years. I have a bachelor's degree from Central

Connecticut University.

How Long in Newtown: I have been the manager here for 17 years. I live in

Southington.

Biggest Change Seen in Town: The biggest changes have to be the Sand Hill

Plaza and Queen Street shopping center across the street.

Family: My wife Joan and I have been married for 33 years. We have five

children, Jesse, Jr, 31; Bonnie, 28; Randy, 15; Danielle, 13; and Brian, 11.

We have four grandchildren, Chelsia, 8; Taylor, 3; Josh, 3; and Justin, 1.

Hobbies: I have coached ten- to 12-year-old tackle football for the last ten

years. For only four years of it I had a child on the team. I will continue

doing it. I really enjoy it! In the summer, I help out coaching All-Star

baseball teams.

Favorite Books and Authors: I read sports magazines. I'm a big Yankees fan and

of Giants football.

Favorite TV Show: I liked Coach , but it's gone now. ESPN is my favorite

channel. I rarely watch other programs.

Organizations: I am a former member of the Knights of Columbus. I am a member

of Mary Our Queen Church in Southington.

Most Vivid Memory About Newtown: All the people who used to shop here that

have passed away. When you're in a store for so long, you get to know so many

people. They come in and talk to me. When they're gone, it's sad. I had never

been in a store for more than two years before. I was always opening new

stores. One store starts growing on you. It's sad to leave.

Favorite Vacation Spot: Anywhere by the ocean in North or South Carolina. We

try to spend at least one week by the ocean. I like the beaches down south.

Personal Philosophy: I try to treat people the way I'd like to be treated. I

try to bring fun to the business sometimes.
