Steiff Siblings A Hit At Hap Moore Auction
KENNEBUNK, ME. -- Two early 20-inch Steiff teddy bears found in an old
suitcase in a seacoast Maine estate attic brought much enthusiasm and a
$22,000 final price at Hap Moore's on-site estate auction on August 21. The
apparent rarity of a male and a female Steiff teddy always having been
together was not evident to the auctioneer or his staff until the buyer, a
dealer-collector, chatted with the sales manager after the sale.
Also sold were original bisque-head dolls marked Handwerck and Simon & Halbig,
bringing $1925.00. 200 registered bidders came out in rainy weather to compete
for these among 515 lots of estate and privately owned items for various New
England homes. The day's leading textile was a 63 by 58 inch late Nineteenth
Century Navajo weaving in a flame stitch design which brought $3,850, while a
11 by 8 foot colorful old Heriz carpet was knocked down for $4,620.
A James Howe (Scotland) oil painting on canvas of a stable scene netted
$3,300.
Other good Victorian furniture sold well, evidenced by a three-piece heavily
carved oak bedroom set which was hammered down at $5,335.
York, ME auctioneer Hap Moore plans his next sale in October. For more
