George E. Swanson

George E. Swanson, 78, of 10 School Path, Weston, husband of Barbara (Knapp)

Swanson, died August 11, at Danbury Hospital.

He was the brother of William M. Swanson of Newtown.

Mr Swanson was born in Danbury, June 1, 1921, a son of the late John and Anna

(Selvic) Swanson. He was a graduate of Danbury High School, class of 1939, and

a Danbury resident until 1951, when he moved to Weston. A Boy Scout as a young

man, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He served in the US Navy during

World War II, aboard the USS Card in the Atlantic.

Owner of the former Weston Builders Company he built custom homes throughout

the greater Weston area. He was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church of

Georgetown, the Danbury Madhatters Barbershop Chorus, the Veterans of Foreign

Wars of Georgetown and the USS Card Association.

Besides his wife and brother, he is survived by his son, Robert E. Swanson of

Weston, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter,

Cynthia Louise Swanson; his brother, John A. Swanson; and his sister, Olga

Heering.

Funeral services will be held at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main Street,

Danbury, on Saturday, August 14, at 10:30 am. Burial will be in Wooster

Cemetery, Danbury.

Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home Friday, from 5 to 8 pm.

Contributions in Mr Swanson's memory may be made to a charity of one's choice.

David A. Osborne

David A. Osborne, II, 71, a retired fuel company executive and naturalist who

helped repopulate bluebirds along the Ohio River, died August 4 at Bluebird

Farm in St Clairsville, Ohio.

Mr Osborne was the brother of James M. Osborne of Sandy Hook and uncle of

Susan (Osborne) White of Newtown and Michael B. Osborne of Sandy Hook.

Mr Osborne was born in Cleveland, a son of the late James M. Osborne and Alice

(Quayle) Osborne. He graduated from Chardon High School, then served in the

Marine Corps. He attended Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. He was an

employee of Youghlogheny and Ohio Coal Company for 31 years and was vice

president of operations until his retirement.

He was a past president of the Noon Club in St Clairsville, assistant governor

of the Rotary District, a Paul Harris Fellow, and first recipient of the St

Clairsville Rotary Sunrise Honorary Member Award. He belonged to Belmont Hills

Country Club and attended Christ the King Lutheran Church in St Clairsville.

He served on several boards of directors.

He created a bluebird trail in Belmont and Harrison counties that encompassed

15 miles and contained 140 bluebird houses. In 1997, he was given the

Conservator of the Year Award from the Daughters of the American Revolution.

In addition to his brother, niece and nephew, he is survived by his wife,

Audrey; sons, David A. and James M., of Chardon, Ohio; a daughter, Ann, of

Columbus, Ohio; a sister; seven grandchildren; another niece, Dorothy

(Osborne) Cox of Guilford; and another nephew, J. Robert Osborne of Hamden.

Services were held August 6 at Bluebird Farm, Dunham Road, St Clairsville.

Martin H. Howley

Martin H. Howley, 81, husband of the late Julia (Danuszar) Howley, of 5 Laurel

Road in Newtown, died August 9 in Mediplex of Danbury. He was the father of

Marlene Spremullo of Sandy Hook.

He was born in Bethel on October 27, 1917, son of the late Martin J. and

Frances (McLaughlin) Howley. A resident of Newtown for 40 years, Mr Howley was

employed for over 30 years as a supervisor of Noranda Metal Products in

Newtown. During World War II he served as a medic in the US Army.

In addition to his daughter, he is survived by two sons, Wayne Howley of

Shelton and Martin Howley of Danbury; three sisters, Renee Gakeler of Bethel,

Catherine Kroha of New Milford, and Agnes Mason of Florida; three

grandchildren, Jennifer Piccirillo and Jamie and Michael Howley; one

great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 13, at 9:30 am, from the Honan

Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown, and at 10 am at St Rose Church in

Newtown for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery

in Bethel. Calling hours were scheduled at the funeral home on Thursday,

August 12, from 6 to 8 pm.

Auzenda Chaves

Auzenda Chaves, 85, of Monroe, died August 9, in St Vincent's Medical Center.

She was the mother of Lucille Chaves-Horvath of Newtown.

Born in Abobeleira, Chaves, Portugal, she resided in Bridgeport since 1941 and

became a United States citizen in 1965 before residing in Monroe for the past

20 years. She was a founding member of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Bridgeport

and a retired seamstress for the Maybelle Dress Company.

She was the widow of Artur Chaves. In addition to her daughter, survivors

include a son, Arthur Chaves of Monroe; three sisters, Celeste Coelho,

Albertina Malta and Palmira Rodrigues; two brothers, Horacio Rodrigues and

Anibal Rodrigues, all of Portugal; four grandchildren, Michael and Dennis

Chaves and Jessica and Adam Horvath, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was held August 12 in the Parente-Lauro Funeral Home, Inc., 559

Washington Avenue, Bridgeport and in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Bridgeport.

Interment was in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull.

Margaret Kurimsky

Margaret (Charney) Kurimsky, 81, of Monroe, beloved wife of Henry Kurimsky,

died August 7 in St Vincent's Medical Center.

She was the sister of Andrew Charney of Sandy Hook.

Born in Monroe, Mrs Kurimsky had been an Ansonia and Monroe resident for most

of her life. She was a past resident of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church

Ladies' Guild, and a member of the Slovak Alliance. Mrs Kurimsky was a member

of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10059 Auxiliary of Trumbull, past

secretary District 1 VFW, and had volunteered at the West Haven Veterans

Hospital.

Survivors, in addition to her beloved husband and brother, are her son, Robert

T. Keller of Wolcott; another brother, John Charney of Monroe; a sister, Irene

Lane of Florida; a granddaughter, Denise M. Keller of Ansonia; and several

nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on August 10 at 10 am in the Holy Trinity Lutheran

Church, White Plains Road, Trumbull.

Memorial donations may be made to the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Mortgage

Fund.

Arrangements were by the Frank Polke and Son Funeral Home.

Catherine B. Coles

Catherine Booth (Sim) Coles, 90, passed away peacefully at Silver Lake Center

in Bristol, Penn. on August 6.

She was born in Aberdeen, Scotland on October 1, 1908, daughter of Isabella

(Booth) and William Sim and the youngest of eight children. She was

predeceased by her sisters, Eliza and Meggie, her brothers, Edward and Harry,

and three infant siblings.

Catherine emigrated to the United States in 1929 at the age of 21 following

her brother, Edward, and settled in Malden, Mass. She worked for John Hancock

Company in Boston for a number of years, married Charles F. Coles, Jr, the

oldest or nine children, and after raising her family worked for Jordan Marsh

Company until her retirement in 1973. Catherine lived in Melrose, Mass. from

1948 until 1989. She was a member of the Melrose Congregational Church and was

involved in numerous volunteer activities, including the church, schools, Girl

Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Melrose-Wakefield Hospital. She loved gardening and

always treasured her rose bushes sent to her from Scotland from her sister,

Eliza.

Catherine, a beloved mother, is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sally

and Walter Cheney of Newtown; her son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Joan

Coles of Duluth, Ga.; four grandchildren, David Cheney of Maplewood, N.J.,

Karen Cheney of Bridgeport, Cindy (Coles) Oliver of Superior, Colo., and

Cheryl (Coles) Castro of Kailua, Hawaii; six great-grandchildren, Cortland,

Kylee and Kianna Castro, Henry and Bruce Oliver and Seanna Cheney; and many

nieces and nephews in the States as well as Scotland, England and New Zealand.

She was a very special friend to many and will be dearly missed.

Cremation is being arranged by the Molden Funeral Chapel of Bristol, Penn.

There are no calling hours. At a later date Catherine's family will accompany

her ashes to her beloved Scotland.

Margaret Pepe

Margaret Pepe, 68, of 37 Mt Pleasant Road, Newtown, died on August 5 at

Danbury Hospital after a brief illness. She was the devoted wife of Louis Pepe

and mother of Gary Pepe of Newtown.

Mrs Pepe was born on May 12, 1931, in Derby, daughter of the late Martin and

Julia (Symbolic) Repka. She was a resident of Shelton before moving to Newtown

43 years ago.

Mrs Pepe is survived by sisters Catherine Sabo, Florence Johnson and Elizabeth

Pagano, all of Shelton. She was predeceased by a son, Lorin Pepe, and a

brother, Arnold Repka.

A memorial service was held August 11 at the Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River

Road, Shelton, with the Rev Paul Murphy of St Joseph Church, Shelton,

officiating. A private burial service took place at the convenience of the

family.

Regina Evans

Regina (Gunzburger) Evans, 79, of 8 Atwood Road, Woodbury, wife of Wesley G.

Evans, died August 4 at her home.

Mrs Evans was born July 24, 1920 in Munich, Germany, daughter of the late

Wilhelm and Sophia (Scherrer) Gunzburger. A former Newtown resident for over

20 years, Mrs Evans was one of the founders and a past president,

vice-president and liaison officer for the Spay and Neuter Association of

Newtown.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her son, Dean Evans of Woodbury; a

daughter, Leslee Bowman of Hopewell Junction, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and

two great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial was private.

Alice J. Tonnessen

Alice J. Tonnessen, 79, of El Cajon, Calif., formerly of Mt Nebo Road in

Newtown, wife of the late Arnt W. Tonnessen, died on July 27 at Grossmont

Hospital in La Mesa, Calif.

Mrs Tonnessen was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on September 25, 1919. She was active

for many years in the Sons of Norway and the Newtown Senior Center.

She is survived by two sons, Alan Tonnessen of Southbury and Arnt H. Tonnessen

of El Cajon, Calif.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A private burial will take place in Newtown at the convenience of the family.
