William Sidney Mount: At Stony Brook
(with 3 cuts)
STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The Museums at Stony Brook will present the exhibition
"William Sidney Mount: Family and Friends" in the Member's Gallery of the Art
Museum from October 2 through January 9.
The exhibition explores the human roots of Mount's painting within this
locale. Mount often used friends, neighbors, and relatives as the models in
his genre scenes; however, his diaries and journals, which are rich sources of
information about other aspects of his life and work, almost never identify
who posed for him. "William Sidney Mount: Family and Friends" is an effort to
identify those who served as models for Mount's works.
Many of the paintings exhibited have clearly identified subjects; in
particular, Mount painted members of his family many times, and often made
portrait sketches of friends. Some portraits, particularly of family members,
were painted not as paid commissions but as gifts or for Mount's own benefit.
All of the works in the exhibition are from the collection of the Museums at
Stony Brook. Curated by Dr Robert W. Kenney, Professor Emeritus of History at
George Washington University, the exhibition is the result of research efforts
by the William Sidney Mount Research Group of the Three Village Historical
Society.
Celebrating their 60th Anniversary year, the Museums at Stony Brook are
located at 1208 Route 25A. For more information, please call 516/751-0066.
