Vintage And Modern Posters Will Show At The International Poster Gallery
(with 1 cut)
BOSTON, MASS. -- International Poster Gallery (IPG) announces "New
Acquisitions," a special exhibition spanning 100 years of vintage and modern
posters from the 1880's to the 1980's, created by some of the most talented
artists of the medium. The exhibition celebrates many different poster
traditions, particularly those of Italy, Holland, Switzerland, France and
Russia. "New Acquisitions" opens Thursday, September 9, in conjunction with
the Arts Festival of Boston, and runs through October 31.
While vintage French posters are perhaps the most well-known in the United
States, this exhibition reconfirms the gallery's goal of bringing to light
both vintage and modern poster masterworks from other countries.
Italian posters have enjoyed a renaissance of attention and scholarship due in
large measure to the IPG and its owner, Jim Lapides, a pioneer collector and
dealer in this field. In 1995 and 1996, the gallery hosted the first two major
exhibitions of Italian poster masterpieces in the U.S. This year, the highest
poster auction price was, for the first time, paid for an Italian poster --
$143,000 for a rare Fiat poster. The gallery has the largest collection of
Italian posters for sale anywhere in the world.
"This exhibition not only allows us to present some of our finest new
acquisitions," comments gallery owner Jim Lapides. "It also gives visitors an
opportunity to see a range of posters from numerous countries, and to
understand why, today, posters are recognized as an accessible and important
art form."
IPG is located at 205 Newbury Street. Gallery hours are Monday to Saturday, 10
am to 6 pm, and Sunday, noon to 6 pm. For more information, call 617/375-0076.
