Field Hockey Squad Blanks Weston 2-0, Falls At Masuk, 2-1
After seeing its season-opening five-game unbeaten streak come to an end and enduring consecutive losses, Newtown High School’s field hockey team got back on the winning track. The Nighthawks, following a 2-1 setback to New Milford on September 24 and a 4-0 loss at New Fairfield two days later, blanked Weston 2-0 at Blue & Gold Stadium on September 27.
In the win over Weston, Caroline Tanner scored in the first half and, Emily Campbell assisted Erica Thill for a second-half cage-finder. Both teams developed good scoring chances and the Nighthawks finished the game with a slim shots advantage of 10-8. Newtown also had the edge in penalty corners, 10-6. NHS goaltender Casey Demers made eight saves in the win.
The Nighthawks visited Masuk of Monroe on October 1 and came up just short, 2-1. The Nighthawks carried a 4-3-2 record into a Friday, October 4 clash with the Bethel Wildcats, scheduled for 7 pm at Blue & Gold Stadium. The Bethel contest is the Play 4 the Cure game in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
