Scholarships Available For Local Residents From The Weller Foundation
The Weller Foundation, Incorporated, a nonprofit organization that was established in 1962 to provide financial assistance to educational, charitable, and civic organizations, has announced new and returning scholarship programs for the 2008-2009 school year. Full-time senior students enrolled in Newtown, Masuk, Joel Barlow, Shelton, and Trumbull high schools can compete.
Specific rules and guidelines are available through each schoolâs Guidance Departments. Scholarship programs will not be offered unless a minimum of three qualified applicants apply. All award recipients will be honored at the Foundationâs Annual Awards Banquet to be held May 4 at Fairfield University. All scholarships will be paid directly to the college or university for deposit into the studentâs account and will be awarded without regard to the studentâs existing financial status.
Scholarships include the Barton L. Weller Scholarship Program, which is a $12,000 scholarship to encourage academic excellence; the Weller Medical/Health Sciences Scholarship, which is a $6,000 scholarship to encourage and assist a senior student who has chosen a course of study in the field of Medical/Health sciences; the Weller Computer Science/Technology Scholarship, which is a $4,000 scholarship to encourage a high school senior who is planning a career in computer science or computer engineering; and the Weller Education Scholarship, which is a $4,000 scholarship to recognize students planning a career in teaching in public or private elementary or secondary schools.
