Mother Daughter Book Club: The C.H. Booth Library is pleased to offer a series of Mother-Daughter book discussions for girls in grades 3-4. The four-part series, “Power Talks II, Courage Under Fire,” begins with a discussion of the book Meet Molly: An American Girl. Multiple copies of the book are available in the children’s department. The program will take place on Wednesday, October 11, at 7 pm in the library meeting room. This program is co-sponsored by the Connecticut Humanities Council and the Friends of the Library. Pat Miniter, a 31- year veteran of New Haven school system, will lead the discussions.

First Author/Illustrator Visit: The Bruce Degan fund for visiting authors and illustrators will sponsor a program by author Stepahnie Calmenson on Sunday, October 15, at 2 pm. The author of more than 50 books for children, including the popular Gator Girls series and Dinner at the Panda Palace, Ms Calmenson will present a funny and informative slide presentation, “A Day in the Life of a Children’s Book Writer.” Following the program Ms Calmenson will autograph copies of her books. (These are available for purchase on the day of the presentation.)

Adult Programs

Mystery Lovers! The Friends of the Library are sponsoring an exciting new book discussion series. The series, which features four best selling mysteries, will continue on Tuesday, October 10, at 7:30 pm with All That Remains by Patricia Cornwell. On October 24, the book will be Ill Wind by Nevada Barr, and on November 7, One for the Money by Janet Evanovich. A limited number of copies of all titles are available at the library. Yoga with Ricky Ayers: Yoga continues at the library with Ricky Ayers on Thursdays in October from 4:45-6 pm in the meeting room. Please call Ricky at 262-8721 to sign up for this program.

History of the Radio: The Newtown Historical Society is presenting a program, ‘The History of

Radio,” on Tuesday, October 10, at 7:30 pm in the meeting room. The public is invited to attend and refreshments will be served.

Healthy Aging: The Family Counseling Center is sponsoring a workshop on October 12 on Healthy Aging in the new meeting room. The program will begin at 7:00 pm and is free and open to the public.

Retirement Investment Strategies: Joan Bouchard, CLU and ChFC, will conduct an educational workshop on retirement investment strategies on Thursday, October 12, at 6 pm in the Board Room of the C.H. Booth Library. Come learn how to calculate the cost of your retirement and understand various tax laws with regards to your investments. There is no fee for the workshop but you should call to reserve a seat and free workbook at 797-1203.

Technology Topics with Bob Brand: A beginner’s class, “All About E-Mail,” will take place on Saturday, October 14, from 10 am to 12 pm in the meeting room. This class will review some Internet basics and then show you how to start using e-mail. There is no charge for this program, but sign-up is required at the circulation desk or by calling the library at 426-4533.

Calling all Knitters: Susan Shaw will be teaching a beginner’s knitting class for four consecutive Wednesdays starting on October 18, at 12:15 pm. Knitters will learn how to make mittens. Supplies needed for first class will be either size 8 (adult) single-pointed needles or size 10 (child) single-pointed

needles, a yarn needle, two yarn holders, and 4 oz of worsted weight yarn. Please sign up at the circulation desk by calling 426-4533.

Book Discussion: The Awakening: On Thursday, October 19, at 7:30 pm the book group will meet to discuss Kate Chopin’s classic novel, The Awakening. Please join us for lively discussion.

Flagpole Photographers: The Flagpole Photographers Camera Club is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping photographers of all levels learn more about photography. Meetings feature guest speakers, monthly photo competitions, field trips, and workshops. At the October 19 meeting Richard Maggs will be the featured speaker. The monthly subject will be nature slides. The program is scheduled to begin at 7:30 pm in the meeting room.
