Norma McGowan

Beloved Mother And Wife

Norma McGowan, 71, of Sandy Hook died August 11 at the family’s secondary home at Heritage Village in Southbury. She was born August 22, 1937, in Alma, Ga., and moved to Newtown in 1968 with her husband.

She is survived by her husband, retired Marine Corps Major Joseph McGowan; four children, Michael McGowan and his wife, Kelly, Kathleen McGowan-Martin and her husband, Daniel, US Army Major Joseph McGowan, Jr, and his wife, Jennifer, and Ann Marks and her husband,  USAF Colonel Rodney Marks; her sister, Ernestine Smith; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A loving mother and wife, Mrs McGowan was a homemaker, and conducted a private daycare business in Sandy Hook for many years. She was also active with the Girl Scouts of America when her daughters were young.

As a member of a military family, on Monday, October 19, Mrs McGowan will be inurned at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. A celebration of her life is scheduled for Sunday, November 1, from 1 to 5 pm, in the Alexandria Room at Edmond Town Hall. Friends and family are invited to share their memories.
