NHS Soccer, Volleyball, Cross Country And Swimming Recap

Newtown High School’s soccer, volleyball and swimming and diving teams all had some success this past week.

The boys’ soccer team earned a win and a tie, the girls’ soccer team had a tie, the volleyball team avenged a loss to Bunnell and the swim team earned its first win of the campaign. Here are some of the highlights:

Corner Kicks

The boys’ soccer team went to Danbury and beat Immaculate 3-0 on September 24 and played Pomperaug of Southbury to a scoreless tie at home this past Saturday night.

In the win over Immaculate, Jeff DiNicola scored twice and Josh Engler also netted goal and Newtown has not allowed a goal against since its first game.  Newtown stands at 4-0-1 heading into a Friday, October 2 home game with Bethel (3:45 pm at Treadwell Park). The Nighthawks will host Holy Cross at Blue & Gold Stadium at 6 pm on Saturday. The game coincides with the team’s Soccerfest.

The girls’ soccer team played once this past week and, like the boys, finished in a scoreless tie with Pomperaug on Saturday. The girls were 1-1-2 heading into Wednesday’s game against Immaculate (after The Bee went to press). Newtown visits Bethel on Friday, October 2 and hosts Holy Cross Saturday at 4 pm at Blue & Gold Stadium.

 

Spikes And Digs

In the gymnasiums, the girls’ volleyball team, following a 3-0 win at Masuk in Monroe in the season opener, lost 3-2 to Joel Barlow in Redding on September 23 and fell 3-2 at Bunnell in Stratford on September 25. The Nighthawks, though, rebounded in a rematch with Bunnell, winning 3-1 at home on Tuesday to improve to 2-2.

Newtown was scheduled to host Masuk on Wednesday and will visit New Milford on Friday, October 2. NHS returns home on Monday to play New Fairfield at 5 pm.

On Course

Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ cross country teams competed at Weston High School on Tuesday. The girls won three races to improve to 9-0 and the boys defeated Oxford and lost to Weston. The boys, this past Saturday, earned sixth at the Bethel Invitational. Meet results are as follows:

The NHS girls defeated Weston 27-30, Lauralton Hall 20-43 and Oxford 16-44.

Top finishers: Anne Martino, third, 19:19; Katie Burns, fifth, 19:40; Erin Begg, seventh, 19:53; Mara Scallon, eighth, 20:16; Dani Villa, tenth, 21:01; Lilly Rodriguez, 11th, 21:02; Hanni Brumaghim, 18th, 22:19; Faith Mangiafico, 19th, 22:34; Katy Howell, 20th, 22:36.

The Newtown boys defeated Oxford 15-50 and was edged by Weston 29-30.

Weston took the top three finishes to seal the win. Newtown dominated the rest of the field, claiming spots 4-12 in the following order: Austin Baldour, Pat Sullivan, Jake Feinstein, Dieter Gutbrod, Palmer Lintz, Matt Bobkowski, Andrew LaMarche, Erik Hoffman and Vinnie Brophy. The times ranged from Baldour’s 16:59 and Brophy’s 18:02.

In the Bethel Invitational, Sullivan was Newtown’s fastest finisher as he completed the course in 18:11. Baldour was next in 18:27. Feinstein won the freshman race in 8:27. Lintz won the JV race in 18:19 and Gutbrod was third (18:28).

In The Pool

Newtown’s swimming and diving team won its first meet of the season on Tuesday, topping host Weston 99-85.

First place finishers for Newtown are as follows: 100-yard breaststroke: Megan Baylis, 1:18.18; 50 freestyle: Kelsey McEvoy, 27.31; 100 butterfly: Maggie Atkinson, 1:10.01; 100 free: McEvoy, 59.80; diving: Kate Martinelli, 139.20; 400 freestyle relay: Fahey, C. Falgerholm, K. Gates and B. Solano, 4:13.56; 200 medley relay: K. McEvoy, M Balis, M. Atkinson and M. Hoolehan.

The Nighthawks have their first home meet on Friday, October 2 at 4 pm when Oxford comes to town.
