Newtown High School’s girls’ swimming and diving team continues to perform at a high level and break records. The Nighthawks set two pool records in relay events in a September 19 win over Weston, and diver Kari Djonne broke both her own team record and the pool mark during a 96-82 win over visiting New Fairfield on September 30.

Djonne’s dive during the win over New Fairfield scored 279.45 points as part of Newtown’s one-two-three outcome on the diving board. Last week, in the big 97-89 victory over defending Class S state and South-West Conference champion Weston, the 200 yard freestyle relay team of Mary Hufziger, Eliza Eggleston, Mandy Mele, and Amy Martinelli set a new pool standard by finishing in a time of 1:43.25. The 400 relay contingent of Hufziger, Bridget Duero, Martinelli, and Megan McDonald had a time of 3:46.69 to set another standard.

“I thought the meet went well, we had several new SWC qualifiers today, which is a great sign of things to come. I’m looking forward to the next challenge we have this week versus an excellent Pomeraug team that won the Class M state championships last year,” Newtown Coach Zach Gauvin said.

The Nighthawks were scheduled to visit Pomperaug of Southbury, for a battle of unbeaten squads, on October 2. Newtown won its first six meets, and the Panthers started 5-0. The swimmers and divers return to NHS to host Stratford at 4 pm on Tuesday, October 7.
