A Waterford man died Tuesday afternoon after the car he was operating crashed into a tree in southern Newtown.
Newtown Police report that officers along with Botsford Fire Rescue, Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and a paramedic were dispatched to 190 Huntingtown Road around 4:20 pm September 28, after a caller reported the crash. Newtown Emergency Communications Center dispatchers subsequently reported the operator was trapped inside the vehicle. The caller was unable to get to the driver due to damage to the vehicle.
Hook & Ladder was then added to the call to assist in the extrication.
Police determined that Bert Schovanec, 22, of Waterford, operating an Acura Integra, was traveling northbound on Huntingtown Road. The vehicle then traveled off the right side of the roadway and the driver’s side of the vehicle struck a tree. The crash site was between Huntingtown's intersections with Maltbie Road and Sycamore Drive.
Schovenac was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash is still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Newtown Police Department at 203-426-5841.
A gofundme campaign was launched on Friday, October 2, to help Schovanec's family with funeral and related expenses. The campaign has a $15,000 goal, of which $3,670 had been raised by early Saturday afternoon.
