Children’s Fishing Derby A Huge Success
To the Editor:
American Legion Post 202 was honored to be a sponsor of the District 3 Children’s Fishing Derby held Saturday, September 25, at Great Hollow Lake, Monroe. This event, the first of its kind, was opened to all young people 15 years of age and under with three age groups of competition: 5 and under, 6–10 and 11–15 years old.
In total, 75 children participated. Not bad for a first-time event! Four girls and five boys won trophies and assorted prizes, as well as fishing gear.
There were parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, friends, and neighbors all there to cheer them on. Our Post was one of nine American Legion Family sponsors in Fairfield County. We want to thank Bounty Hunters Bait and Tackle, 129 South Main Street, Newtown, for its very generous support of prizes and equipment.
We also send a great big “thank you” to our friends at Newtown Country Club who provided rods and reels for those first-time anglers who had no equipment. It is because of the generosity of our sponsors that we could hold this event.
If you are a veteran or a veteran family member and would like to be a part of activities like this, please reach out to AmericanLegionNewtown@gmail.com or call 203-577-9568 for more information. We meet the first Wednesday of every month at 7 pm at the Newtown Community Center. Our next meeting is Wednesday, October 6.
Thank you again to all who participated, but most especially our sponsors!
