Wolfpack Wins Invitational

The Newtown Wolfpack U10 girls’ travel soccer team went undefeated in the Madison Invitational Tournament this past weekend, outscoring four opponents a combined 18-0 en route to the division title. Game highlights are as follows:

Game 1: Newtown 4, Old Saybrook 0: Isabella Manfredi started the scoring. Karsen Pirone added two goals and Sarah Tressler had another. Kaitlyn King, Malia Gioffre, Colleen Phanuef, and Hannah Daly handled the defensive duties, shutting down Old Saybrook. Laura Augenbraun and Faith O’Hara played forward and set up several of the goals, while Jackie Matthews worked the midfield.

Game 2: Newtown 7, Madison Hurricanes 0: Manfredi had two goals, Pirone, Sarah, Malia, Phanuef and Matthews added one score each in the dominating win. Laura, Faith, Daly and King notched assists setting up each of the scores.

Game 3: Newtown 2, Clinton 0: In the closest contest yet, Newtown got goals in the first half from O’Hara and Matthews.  The defense was again led by King, Daly, Gioffre, and Phanuef who were great at stopping any Clinton offense and immediately playing out of the backfield with a counter attack.

Game 4: Newtown 5, Madison Thunder 0: Jackie Matthews had two goals, Daly, Manfredi, and Tressler also added one each as Newtown showed excellent possession soccer in the final match, taking home the division win. The midfield was controlled by Pirone and King, forwards were Augenbraun and O’Hara, and the defensive effort was anchored by Phanuef and Gioffre.
