Who doesnât love a few wings? At TKâs American Café in Danbury, it is well known that if you visit the White Street sports bar on your birthday, you get one free famous chicken wing for each year of your birth. Newtown resident Olive Ratcliffe didnât know about TKâs generous birthday gift. She only knew she was begin taken to TKâs one evening last week by her niece and nephew to celebrate her birthday. Was she surprised to get 94 wings served up, cost free? I guess so! And Iâm betting the kitchen did a double take on the order for 94 free chicken wings. (The trio did their best, but it seems that there were a few wings wrapped to go.) Happy Birthday, Olive!
There is a new book on the horizon, and Iâm pretty sure it is not banned. But the public will only have this one opportunity to purchase a copy of Sentences, a collection of writings by prisoners at Garner Correctional Institute in Newtown. Chris Belden, writer and musician, is presenting a fundraiser of guitar music and readings from Sentences, Sunday, October 2, from 3 to 5 pm, at the Hideaway Café on Route 25 in Newtown. Chris has been teaching creative writing for two years at Garner, and has collected the works into a book, and published it at his own expense. He is hoping for support to offset that cost. Sentences is an intriguing look inside the walls of the prison and the prisonerâs minds â and you get to hear Chrisâs original music if you go.
Bee Publisher Scudder Smith had a nice surprise last week when Preston âMateâ McCain, an old school friend of Mr Smithâs brother, Ted, stopped by The Bee office to say hello. Mate grew up in Newtown and graduated with the Class of 1957 from Hawley School. Like his dad, Don McCain, Mate worked at Curtis Packaging for a while, and is now president of McCain Associates, Inc, packaging specialists, in Pennsylvania.
Gear up for leaf peeping season! Iâve noticed lots of trees are starting to show their true colors, despite the summerlike feel to the days this week. (Leaves turn color when the days grow shorter, and less chlorophyll is produced. So it doesnât matter how warm it stays.) According to the Connecticut Energy and Environmental Protection agency, peak foliage season will creep into our part of the state between October 28 and November 7. If you need to seek out pretty colors before then, head north. Things will start brightening up near the Massachusetts border in mid-October.
Sandy Hook resident, comedian Andrew Kennedy will be performing at the Treehouse Comedy Club in Stratford this Saturday, October 1, at 9 pm. For tickets go to www.andrewkennedylive.com. Andrew will share the stage with Nore Davis from MTVâs Yo Mama and a special guest to be announced on Saturday night. Tickets are $17.50, and seating is limited so donât wait until the last minute to decide. Also, if youâve been to Foxwoods recently, youâve seen Andrewâs face plastered all over the place. Heâll be at Foxwoods October 14 and 15. That gives you three chances for a good night of laughs, all in Connecticut. See you there!
If you follow Tiger Woods on Twitter, you already know this, but for everyone who is not tight with the professional golfer, I hear that Tiger has hired Joe LaCava, who grew up here in Newtown, as his caddie. Congratulations, Joe, and good luck!
Hereâs news from the Great Beyond, or at least close to the Great Beyond. The Newtown Village Cemetery Association has a new website, www.newtownvillagecemetery.org. In case youâve been wondering the who, what, when, where, and why of being laid to rest in Newtownâs premiere resting place off of Elm Drive, the website can answer all of those questions, or put you in touch with someone (on this side of the bright light) to answer those questions.
You can be sure that I will rouse myself from my favorite resting place on the cushy chair and dig up the dirt in Newtown for next week, so hereâs hoping that you⦠Read me again.
