Who Does The Board of Education Work For?
To the Editor:
Three years ago, I called the previous first selectman asking about the Board Of Education and the superintendent. I was told that he had no control over the Board of Education and the superintendent, that they were a separate entity. Well guess what? They work for us, the registered voters of Newtown. So this November when we all go to the polls letâs remember some things that this Board of Education has done for us.
They on their own voted in a new bus company that I have yet to hear of any resident who wanted a new one. By doing this they put 32 Newtown owner-operator bus drivers out of work. The bidding of the contract was anything but fair. They allowed All-Star to resubmit a lower bid. Not to mention the final contract is being changed from that they must garage there buses in Newtown to now saying if possible to garage the buses in Newtown. Well that could cost the town about $60,000 in tax revenue when All-Star doesnât garage those 32 buses in town.
Then with the next meeting they vote a raise and contract extension for the superintendent and her assistants. I guess she couldnât live on $169,000 a year plus car and misc expenses. I do not make near as much as she and I have a son in college and havenât gotten a raise in two years. Maybe they can vote me in one as well.
I wonder if we will see our Board of Education and superintendent marching in the parade in October. Will they come out and face the people of this town who they wield so much power over?
Remember in November; letâs take back our town and schools and vote out any incumbent running again for the Board of Education.
