Show Your Support

For The Owner-Operators

To the Editor:

What a shame that the Board of Education could consider a bid from an outside company to drive the children of Newtown to school. We have been so lucky the 27 years I know of to have our neighbors and friends be the ones responsible for our children’s safety.

These owner-operators pay personal property taxes to Newtown and spend their hard-earned money in Newtown. They volunteered for free to evacuate everyone from Fairfield Hills when we had a bad storm and people of Newtown were in jeopardy. My children had a police officer driving them to school! Who could beat that for safety?

Newtown is a unique community that continues to grow because of all the wonderful people that live here. We have a flagpole and we have owner-operators that are the fabric of Newtown. If we finalize this agreement with All-Star Transportation we are losing taxes and income. In addition, we have contributed to the recession by firing our neighbors and leaving them in the lurch. Is that what Newtown is all about? Shame on those who have led this takeover by the All-Star company and those on the Board of Education who agreed to this change. It is not surprising that increases in salary were made to some of them while Newtowners will be going without a paycheck.

Please show your support for these dedicated drivers by putting yellow ribbons on your cars and homes. I even give them thumbs up when I drive by them. After all this time, it is a must that we continue to support them and hope that one of the members of the board will reverse his or her decision because the voice of Newtown is asking for it and that is who they are supposed to represent.
