Pie Contest Was A Sweet Success For Bakers, Consumers

The Alexandria Room at Edmond Town Hall was filled with the scent of home baked pies on September 17 as judges Donald Bates, Ann Fowler-Cruz, and Bob Lambert tasted and rated the First Annual Senior Helpers Pie Baking Contest.

The event was sponsored by Senior Helpers, a regional provider of nonmedical in-home care.

The following bakers won first, second, and third place prizes in their respective categories.

Peach: Karen O’Connell, Cathy Monckton, and Linda Komarowsky;

Apple: Alice Baye, Deb Tether, and Jennifer Peterson;

Blueberry: Dolores Winans, Cynthia Boccuzzi, and Sue Christian.

A cherry pie baked by Nicole Christensen won first prize; a sweet potato pie baked by Theresa Berryman won an honorable mention.

After the judging, all people attending the event were given a slice of pie of their choice.

Timothy Holian was the judge of the Pie Eating Contest that followed. Devon Peterson won first place, followed by Gordon Walsh and Christian Thanasoulis.

Ribbons were awarded and prizes included gift certificates to Sal e Pepe, My Place, an iTunes gift card, and Edmond Town Hall movie tickets. There was also a contest on naming how many jelly beans were in a jar as well as how many M&Ms were in a jar.

Gus Thanasoulis, owner of Senior Helpers, said that the success of the event was due to the eager participation of contestants of all ages. He also recognized Marie Sturdevant, marketing director of Senior Helpers, for her support of the event.

“Marie was the catalyst behind the set up, organization and marketing of the event,” Mr Thanasoulis.

Mr Thanasoulis said Senior Helpers is looking forward to hosting the Annual Newtown Pie Baking/Pie Eating contest each September, and have participants from various towns competing.
