Hawley Celebrates Its Summer Readers

By Eliza Hallabeck

Hawley Elementary School students gathered in the school’s gymnasium on Wednesday, September 21, for a schoolwide assembly that recognized students that read and handed in their reading lists to the school’s library/media specialist Doris Papp for the summer.

“We know,” said Hawley Principal Jo-Ann Peters at the start of the assembly, “during the school year you work really hard reading every night, but reading in the summer is also important.”

Readers who met summer goals and submitted a summer reading list to Mrs Papp were recognized during the assembly and received items, including a bookmark and certificate, to mark their accomplishment.

Mrs Papp also read to the students during the assembly. She downloaded an e-book to her computer that was projected onto a screen in the gymnasium for the students to read along as she read from her hardcopy of How Rocket Learned To Read by Tad Hills.

Each reader was asked to stand during the assembly to receive personal recognition for his/her summer reading accomplishment.

“All of the people who read this summer and got their lists to me, I really congratulate you,” said Mrs Papp during the assembly.
