Flagpole Photographers Offering Second Annual ‘Newtown And Beyond’ Exhibition, Also Planning Hands-On Workshop

The Town of Newtown/Office of First Selectman Pat Llodra and Flagpole Photographers Camera Club will co-sponsor a photography exhibit at Newtown Municipal Center, to be on view Sunday, October 2, through Thursday, October 27.

“Newtown and Beyond” will showcase photographs taken by members of the local camera club. Photos featuring Newtown will be included, in addition to favorite works of members, regardless of where they were taken. Organizers expect to hang over 150 photographs in the gallery-like setting offered by the central corridor of the municipal center.

The exhibit will open with a reception, open to the public, on Sunday, October 2, from 2 to 4 pm. The Municipal Center, at 3 Primrose Street within the Fairfield Hills campus, which is usually closed on weekends, will be open for the reception. Desserts and beverages will be served and music will be performed.

Following the opening, the exhibit will be available for viewing during business hours of Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4:30 pm.

Co-chairs of the exhibit are Rhonda Cullens and Win Brickmeier, who can be reached for additional information at 203-426-8473 and 203-743-2235 respectively. Information on the Flagpole Photographers Camera Club may be found at the club’s website, FlagpolePhotographers.com.

Night Photography Workshop

On Thursday, October 6, Flagpole Photographers will meet at 7:30 pm at Newtown Congregational Church for the first workshop of the year.

This will be a “hands on” event where the public is invited to bring their cameras, tripods and flashes to explore new skills. The theme at this event is Night Photography, where club members and the public will experiment with long exposure, light painting, star trails, and cityscapes.

Attendees will meet briefly in the library in the lower level of the church (at 14 West Street) and then, weather permitting, venture outside to practice these skills.

Flagpole Photographers is a local non-profit group that enables members to share their images and expertise, to learn and grow in their photography, and to enjoy the camaraderie of fellow photographers. Members are from diverse backgrounds, with photographic skills ranging from beginning novices to professional photographers.

The club’s season runs annually September through June. Monthly print competitions are usually held at C.H. Booth Library on the third Thursday of the month. New this year are six hands-on learning programs that will take place at Newtown Congregational Church.

All meetings start at 7:30 p.m. All dates, assigned subjects, and programs are included in the schedule on our website.

In the spring, the club hosts an annual exhibit, when images of the year awards are designated. Dues are $30 per person or $50 for a family membership. Students may join at no charge.

Many of members also participate in community service outreach projects such as the Help Portrait event held annually in December.
