The Visionary Spirit Of Hilda Rebay

WOODBURY — The 15th series of spring and fall art presentations at Flanders Nature Center will continue with a Candlelight Art Evening lecture on Friday, October 7. Joyce Thompson and Elizabeth Strick will present “Hilla Rebay: Visionary Spirit.” The program will begin at 7:30 pm.

Hilla Rebay was a co-founder of The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, as well as a noted painter of non-objective art. The extraordinary collaboration between Ms Rebay and Mr Guggenheim resulted in one of the world’s finest collections of early 20th Century art.

It was through Ms Rebay that Mr Guggenheim commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design the Guggenheim Museum, where Ms Rebay was honored with a retrospective of her work last spring.

Joyce Thompson is a former president and current vice president of Westport Arts Center. She holds master’s degrees in both art history and arts administration and is currently on the visual arts committee of Westport Arts Center.

Elizabeth Strick has served as vice president, board member and visual arts chair of Westport Arts Center. Among the exhibits she has curator was a Kandinsky watercolor show from the Hilla Rebay Foundation Collection.

Donations of $5 are requested. The lectures are given in the Flanders Nature Center Van Vleck Studio Welcome Center, on Flanders Road at the corner of Church Hill Road.
