Student Charged With Bomb Making

Police said they arrested a male Newtown Middle School student on September 27, charging him with the manufacture of a bomb and also with breach of peace.

The bomb, which potentially could have exploded, did not explode. There were no injuries.

Police Detective Sergeant Robert Tvardzik said the boy was found to be in possession of the bomb at the school, which houses Grade 7 and 8 students. Det Sgt Tvardzik described the bomb as a “small homemade explosive device.”

The bomb was discovered by school personnel after it had fallen out of the boy’s pocket, Det Sgt Tvardzik said. School officials then alerted police, who investigated and arrested the boy. The bomb manufacturing charge is a felony.

Det Sgt Tvardzik declined to provide details about the bomb that the boy had made.

Police withheld the youth’s identity because he is under age 16. School Resource Officer Gladys Pisani is the investigator. The boy is scheduled to be arraigned on the criminal charges on October 17 in Danbury Juvenile Court.
