Walter E. Evans, 88, of Ridgefield, husband of Marlene (Walter) Evans, died July 27 at Laurel Ridge Health Care Center, Ridgefield. He was born in Ridgefield, August 4, 1925, son of Augusta (Stahl) and Walter O. Evans.

In addition to his wife, his stepchildren, Gregg Garofalo, and his wife Suzanne, of Newtown, Richard Garofalo, and his wife Beverly, of Wethersfield, Lisa Fritz, and Terri Fisher, and her husband John, of Durham; a son, Mark E. Evans, and his wife, Danette of Littleton, Colo.; and 11 grandchildren survive Mr Evans. In addition to his parents, a sister, Arline Evans Turoczi, predeceased him.

Mr Evans graduated from Bryant College.

He was a World War II US Navy veteran. While stationed overseas in Australia, he played baseball against future Hall of Famer Phil Rizzuto.

In 1947, Mr Evans was employed with the Gilbert & Bennett Wire Mill of Georgetown, retiring in 1987 as its treasurer.

He served as a past director of the former Ridgefield Bank, president of the Branchville Fresh Air Association, a trustee of the Ridgefield Cemetery Association, and treasurer of the Ridgefield Old Timers Association.

Mr Evans was honored by the Old Timers Athletic Association for his athleticism. Retiring from baseball and softball, he turned to bowling and later to golf.

Funeral services will take place Monday, August 11, at 1 pm, in the Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield, with the Rev Dr  Charles Hambrick-Stowe, senior pastor of the First Congregational Church of Ridgefield, officiating. Interment will take place in Fairlawn Cemetery, Ridgefield, with military honors. The family will receive friends in the Kane Funeral Home, Monday, from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Old Timers Athletic Association of Ridgefield, Scholarship Fund, 24 Bailey Avenue, Ridgefield CT 06877.
