Ride Benefits New Hook & Ladder Firehouse Fund
By Kendra Bobowick
Peeling off lengths of raffle tickets Sunday, Karin Halstead moved through a heavy crowd gathered for the third annual Firehouse Ride to benefit Newtown Hook & Ladder Company #1.
Continuing its fundraising effort to support a new firehouse were company members, supporters, and between 85 and 100 motorcycle riders. The bikes roared out of Rickyâs Shopping Center at 71 South Main Street at 11 am on September 23, cruising through a crisp fall day with bright sunlight glinting off abundant chrome. The hourlong ride through nearby towns ended back at the plaza where other guests were gathered to enjoy the pig roast and live music at the One-Eyed Pig, which provided the venue for the day.
The fire companyâs Chief Engineer Rob Manna was impressed with the dayâs turnout and ride participation. âWe exceeded last year,â he said. The ride and fundraising event pulled in a little more than $10,000 last year through ticket sales, raffles, sponsor support, and advertising sales. Mr Manna thanked those who contributed to the day, the food, and the âexceptionalâ entertainment.
Waiting for the 11 am start time was Newtown resident Steve Benko, looking at the crowd over his sun-drenched fairing and windshield. Down the row of bikes was rider Joan Allison. She and friend Beth Caldwell got ready for the ride. A real estate agent in town, Ms Caldwell noted the âpretty day for a ride,â and was glad to be supporting the fire company. Hook & Ladder members Jill Moller, Dan Tomascak, and Emily Paloian greeted guests and helped with the dayâs events. Standing in front of the bar and restaurant near a tent with T-shirts for sale were Karin and Krista Halstead with friend Sue Miller, all promoting raffle ticket sales. Emily Anastasio worked the tent.
Stopping in was First Selectman Pat Llodra, who visited with guests and enjoyed the music and lunch.
Company members are looking for a location to build a new firehouse to replace the current facility behind the Edmond Town Hall on Main Street.
