Gamble Pays Off For Newtown Runners

Jake Feinstein again led the field, pacing 109 runners in Newtown High School’s boys’ cross country meet at Reed School on Tuesday. It was a Gamble — a late-race effort by Chris Gamble to be specific — that proved to also be a big difference-maker for the Nighthawks.

Gamble outkicked New Milford’s Zack Guptill in the last 80 meters of the 3.05 mile race to grab seventh place by a mere second, helping the Nighthawks escape with a 28-29 edging of New Milford. Newtown also defeated Pomperaug of Southbury 23-32, and Bunnell of Stratford 16-46.

Feinstein won the race in a time of 16:01; his closest competitor came across the finish line 15 seconds later. Newtown had a five-six-seven finish, with Paul Mangiafico, Mitchell Russo, and Gamble completing their runs in 16:39, 16:45, and 16:47.

In the girls’ meet, the Nighthawks defeated Bunnell 19-42, and lost 36-21 to New Milford and 32-23 to Pomperaug. The Nighthawks were led by Hannah Schwartz and Brianne Moulder in sixth and seventh with times of 20:17 and 20:37. Reagan Cerney placed 11th in 21:33, and Talia Fappiano came in 14th in 21:49.

The boys’ and girls’ squads also had a home race on September 19, a day after the originally scheduled time because of heavy rain. In that competition, the boys defeated Masuk of Monroe 18-43, Stratford 15-49, and Immaculate of Danbury 15-50. The girls beat Masuk 15-50 and Stratford 18-45, and fell 38-17 to Immaculate.

On the boys’ side, Newtown had representatives in the top four places, led by Feinstein in 16:38. Russo was runner up in 16:50, and Mangiafico and Gamble followed in 16:53 and 17:40. Newtown’s Joey Whelan placed eighth in 18:10, Ethan Burg came in tenth in 18:30, and Tom Floros and Nate Steinebrey were less than a second apart, officially placing 11th and 12th in 18:40. Grandon Smith was 13th in 18:48, and Jason Ferrari came across in 14th in 19:04.

Schwartz was fifth for the girls, completing the race in a time of 20:10, Moulder placed sixth in 20:52, Cerney was ninth in 22:00, Fappiano came in tenth in 22:06, and Sarah Craig was 11th in 22:16.
