Annual Newtown Health Fair Promises Something Good For Everybody

Saturday, September 29, marks the community’s 19th annual Health and Public Safety Fair, which is happening at Newtown Middle School from 9 am to 1 pm. 

There are numerous free drawings, including a bicycle from Bethel Bike Shop sponsored by the Newtown Prevention Council, gift certificates to many of Newtown’s restaurants and eateries to honor Family Day, and promotions from many local businesses.

First responders from all five volunteer fire companies will be available to meet visitors, along with volunteers from Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Newtown Underwater Search And Rescue.  Newtown Police will be demonstrating its canine officer’s skills, child safety seat installations, and the department’s DARE vehicle will be on site.

Free health screenings will include skin cancer screening by Dr William Notaro, hearing screening by audiologist Anne Lynn, computerized posture analysis and scoliosis screening by Dr Della Schmid, cholesterol screening by Impact Health, spinal screening and stress screening by Popowich Chiropractic and Acupuncture.

There will be vision screening by Dr Young and Newtown Lions Club, preschool eye screenings by Healthy Eye Alliance, and body mass index (BMI) by Shaklee. 

Other local and regional health care and service providers will be on hand to share their information and services, including the American Red Cross, Kevin’s Community Center, Masonicare at Newtown, local dentists Dr Dawn Bogdan, Drs Dudley, Condon and Golisano, representatives from Dental Associates, Lutheran Social Services, Newtown Foot Care Group, Pediatric Therapy Associates, Urgent Care of Connecticut, and Newtown Visiting Nurse Association.

Avon Pest Control, Al-Anon, Ann’s Place/The Home of I Can, Aqua Environmental Lab, Newtown Chamber of Commerce, Children’s Adventure Center, Connecticut Tick Control, Families Network of Western Connecticut, Juice Plus, Newtown Lyme Disease Task Force, Newtown Prevention Council, Newtown Youth & Family Services, Porco’s Karate Academy, TOPS (Take Pounds Off Sensibly), Voice for Joanie, and The Women’s Center will also be represented.

Bethel VNA will be offering flu shots, and New York Life Insurance will be providing child IDs as well as information about life insurance and long-term care insurance. 

Newtown Social Services will be collecting much-needed food and items for its food pantry. Newtown Emergency Communications will be providing info about emergency communications, CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) and Emergency Management, Newtown Health District will have public health information and the BLAST table with information to help prevent tick-borne diseases 

Newtown Public Works staff will have important recycling info, and Newtown Registrars of Voters will be doing voter registration. Western Connecticut State University will also be conducting a Tick-Borne Disease Prevention Survey.

Newtown VNA will have information to sign up for St Vincent’s mobile mammography van that will be coming to Newtown Municipal Center at Fairfield Hills on October 27.  It is important that women sign up for their mammography screening in advance of the screening date.
