Guests At NSA Fundraiser Will Be First In The Country

To Taste New Wine From Tuscany

October 6 is the date of Newtown Scholarship Association’s (NSA) first annual Harvest Wine & Beer Tasting at Rock Ridge Country Club. The event will run from 6:30 to 9 pm.

The evening of spectacular wine and specialty beers will benefit NSA, which provides need-based financial assistance to college-bound high school graduates from Newtown.

Guests at the wine tasting will be the first in the United States to taste the cabernet sauvignon-based Castello di Bolgheri “Varvara,” Bohlgeri, Tuscany, DOC, 2005. It is made at the oldest estate in Bolheri, near Livorno on the coast of Tuscany. The winery is owned by Count Federico Zileri and Dottore Sebastiano Rossom. Mr Rossom, who made the wine, is the wine maker at Sassacaia, considered by many to be Tuscany’s finest wine.

Also available that night will be Shingleback D-Block Reserve Shiraz, Mclaren Vale, Australia 2003. This is one of the best wines made in Australia today. It received a 93 point score from Robert Parker.

Porulx Lux (Grenache Syarh mourvedre), Paso Robeles, California, 2005, and Proulx Facets (Marsanne roussane Viognier), Paso Robles, 2005, are owned and made by Kevin Patrick Riley, a native of Westport. An up and coming California wine maker, Mr Riley was the youngest ever to receive two 90-point scores from Robert Parker.

Beaulieu Vineyards of Napa California will show Tapestry Reserve 2004, one of their most allocated Bordeaux-style blends.

In addition to many more outstanding wines, specialty beers will be available for tasting. The event will also feature a live and silent auction.

Tickets are $35 and can be purchased at Newtown Savings Bank, Main Street; People’s Bank, Big Y Shopping Center; Sandy Hook Wine and Liquors; Taunton Wine & Liquor; Yankee Discount Wine & Liquors; and Shop & Save Wine and Liquors.
