Committee In Final Stages Of Confirming Names For Gulf War Monument

The Persian Gulf War and Desert Storm Memorial Committee is in the last stages of preparation for the erection of the Persian Gulf Memorial near the Soldier’s & Sailors Monument on Main Street and the committee is zealously trying to reconfirm or gather any additional names to be cast in concrete on the memorial.

The committee includes Emory Check, Michael Hurley, Charles Spiedel, Richard Gottmeier, and Pierre Rochman. Also involved are Dana Demand, Scott Anders, Wayland Johnson, and Jeffrey Zahansky.

October 1 is the deadline the committee has set for accepting additional names for the monument, with the hope of having the monument erected and in place for Veterans’ Day this year.

Listed below are the names of Newtown residents for whom the committee has proof positive that they have served in the Persian Gulf War:

Emory Check (Army), William Evans (Navy), Lawrence Fisher (USMC), Kenneth Godfrey (Air Force), and Richard Gottmeier (Army).

Also, Stephen Hannah (Army), Renee Knapp (Army), Christopher Kieras (USMC), Robert Killing (USMC), and John Klewicki (Army).

Also Brian Leavitt, Roberta C. Leedy (Army), Jimmy Mead (Navy), Paul Schmidle (USMC).

Also, John J. Swart (Army), Donald Sturges (Navy), Darrick Waller (USMC), Jonathan Wrinn (Air Force), and Brian Wade (Navy).

The committee is also considering special recognition for current Newtown residents who served in the Persian Gulf War but who many not have been residents of Newtown when they became engaged in the war. Anyone who may have information about Newtown residents who should be included in the additional listing or in the confirmed listing is encouraged to contact any committee member or Mae Schmidle (426-6264).
