A Walter Wick Riddle At Wadsworth

HARTFORD — Walter Wick, the author and illustrator of the I Spy and Can You See What I See? series of children’s picture puzzle books, has created an exciting riddle for visitors to Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. “To Catch a Thief” takes children and adults through the galleries of “Faith & Fortune: Five Centuries of European Masterworks,” one of the museum’s current exhibitions, in search of a thief.

Five centuries of art come to life through images that capture our imagination today, with dragons and dragon slayers, angels, knights in armor, exotic beasts and more. Follow the riddle and clues to unlock the mystery and catch the thief.

Visitors are challenged to solve the riddle and earn a chance to win a complimentary copy of Can You See What I See? Once Upon a Time,  autographed by Mr Wick.

“Faith & Fortune” celebrates the return of 60 of Wadsworth Atheneum’s renowned Old Master paintings following a three-year national tour. The exhibition of the masterworks provides an opportunity to pair these with equally rich and varied sculpture and decorative arts from the museum’s permanent collections. The paintings include works by Fra Angelico, Caravaggio, Hals, Zurbarán, Canaletto, Boucher, and Tiepolo. In addition, the exhibition features 19th Century masterworks of the Neoclassical and Romantic schools by Ingres, Delacroix, and others.

The sculpture and decorative arts comprise dazzling objects made of bronze, silver, ivory, ceramics and glass. These works of art – many of them objects of devotion, display, or practical use, and symbols of status or intellectual achievement – are being presented as they have never been before, combined with paintings and sculpture in chronological and thematic settings.

“Faith and Fortune” celebrates five centuries of artistic genius while also exploring the cultural and social realms in which these remarkable works were created. The exhibition is on view until December 9.

The Walter Wick riddle will run through the duration of “Faith and Fortune.” As visitors solve the riddle they will be able to put their entry into a box at Visitor Services, and drawings for five winners will be held weekly.

The museum is at 600 Main Street and is open Wednesday through Sunday. For information on museum hours, directions, parking, admission, exhibitions and programs, call 860-278-2670 or visit WadsworthAtheneum.org.
