First Varsity Goals For Bulkley And Singlak (Two Apiece) As Girls’ Soccer Team Cruises
Sometimes a win is more than just any old W. On September 19, Newtown High School’s girls’ soccer team posted a 6-1 victory over visiting Immaculate of Danbury — not unexpected given the matchup this fall — but it was a special one in that a pair of Nighthawks, each in completely different stages of their high school careers, scored their first varsity goals.
What a memorable night for senior Brooke Bulkley and freshman Sadie Singlak.
Bulkley had netted her share of goals throughout the years — not just during spring lacrosse season but in the fall ... with the field hockey team. Just five games after making the switch to soccer she picked up her first and second tallies of her NHS varsity career.
“It’s so fun. I’m really excited. I’m having a lot of fun and we’re doing so well,” Bulkley said.
Bulkley has a soccer background having played the sport growing up and is enjoying a single-season return to the pitch before she focuses on lacrosse; she is committed to the University of Connecticut where lacrosse will continue next year.
As for Singlak, it is just the beginning of high school soccer. The first-year high school player has a lot of soccer ahead and enjoyed getting on the score sheet for what the Nighthawks hope will be the first of many times.
“It’s fun, and scoring my first goal — I was happy I got two,” Singlak said.
Newtown also got goals from Leah Morris, off a cross from Lola Kessler, and a flip-flop scenario tally in which Morris crossed to Kessler for the finish. Bulkley’s second goal came on a rebound of blast off the cross bar from Morris, Newtown’s third strike off the bar in the second half as the Hawks dominated play. Both of Singlak’s tallies were assisted by Eren Weiss, one on a cross and the other on a through ball. Newtown did most of its damage in the first half and built a 4-1 lead heading into the break. The Nighthawks passed well to create chances throughout the game.
“It’s good to see the ball moving around,” said Newtown Coach Adam Bourrett, adding that he was hopeful the Hawks could build on the win in the games that followed. That began with one that was special for Bourret, a September 24 visit to Joel Barlow of Redding. Bourret previously coached at Barlow and headed to his old stomping grounds where his Hawks edged the Falcons 1-0 to improve to 3-3-1.
Morris finished from long range on a square pass from Kessler midway through the first. “Barlow dominated most of the possession but our defense held strong. Maddy Gioiele, Aashni Shetty, Jamie Rowan, Taylor LeRow, Ana Morris, Brooke Jackson, and Teagan Waaler were able to clog up the middle and reduce Barlow chances from distance,” Bourret said. “Grace Newsom had an amazing game keeping a clean sheet against a tough opponent, making seven saves including a couple difficult stops late in the game.”
