Four MV Charges

Police report they were using an electronic marker plate reader near the Exit 11 interchange of Interstate 84 at about 1 pm on September 25, when they\ device indicated that a vehicle passing by them may have pending violations.

Police stopped the vehicle to investigate and then charged motorist Angelika Bakota, 19, of Shelton, with driving an unregistered vehicle, improper use of marker plates, failure to have automotive insurance, and driving without a license.

Police released Bakota for an October 11 court appearance to answer the charges.

Two Drug Stores

Following incidents at two local drug stores on September 23, police arrested two New York City men on criminal charges.

Police said they responded about 10:40 am to a report of an attempted theft having occurred at Walgreens Pharmacy at 49 South Main Street. Police then saw a vehicle similar to that which had been described to them in connection with the Walgreens incident located at the CVS Pharmacy at 6 Queen Street.

That vehicle was later spotted having violated a red traffic signal on Church Hill Road and entering Interstate 84 at the Exit 10 interchange, after which police stopped the vehicle on the highway.

Police said the two men in the vehicle had attempted to steal more than $1,700 of merchandise at Walgreens and more than $800 worth of goods at CVS.

Police charged Hamidou Barry, 24, and Jalahani Tyriq Reddick, 20, both of Brooklyn, each with attempted fourth-degree larceny and attempted fifth-degree larceny.

Barry was released by police on $5,000 bail for an October 10 court appearance. Reddick was held by police on $5,000 bail for a September 24 court arraignment, at which he did not plead. In court, Reddick was released on a written promise to appear in court on October 16.

Pickup Vs SUV

About 8:05 am on September 20, on northbound South Main Street, about 250 feet south of its intersection with Glover Avenue, motorist Thomas Pickel, 53, of Portland, who was driving a Ford F-150 pickup truck, struck the rear end of a 2005 Toyota Highlander SUV driven by Kisha Hopson, 32, of Sandy Hook, police report.

There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Pickel for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

DUI Warrant

Police report that at about 4:30 pm on September 20, they arrested Stefanie Welsh, 29, of Waterbury on a warrant, charging her with driving under the influence, failure to drive in the proper lane, and traveling unreasonably fast in connection with a May 1 nighttime accident on Berkshire Road.

In that incident, Welsh was driving a 2008 Honda Civic auto eastward on Berkshire Road, just east of its intersection with Jordan Hill Road, when she failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway, police have said.

The Honda went onto an embankment, struck a large rock, flipped over onto its roof, hit some guardrailing, and then hit a tree. Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company firefighters extricated Welsh from the flipped auto. The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Welsh to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries.

On September 20, at the police station, Welsh was released from custody for an October 4 court appearance.

Rollover Crash

Police said motorist Denise Madden, 59, of Bridgeport was driving a 2004 Jeep Liberty SUV southward on Hattertown Road, near its intersection with Purdy Station Road, about 9:53 pm on September 20, when she lost control of the vehicle, drove off the northbound road shoulder, spun around, crossed back over the roadway, drove off the southbound road shoulder, overturned onto the vehicle’s driver’s side, and then struck an embankment.

Neither Madden nor a passenger were injured, police said. Police issued Madden an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions.

Church Hill Collision

At about 12:42 pm on September 18, on eastbound Church Hill Road, near its intersection with Walnut Tree Hill Road, motorist George Kramer, 83, of Danbury, who was driving a 2009 Mazda 6 sedan, struck the rear end of a 2015 Volkswagen Jetta compact car driven by Kristen Brink, 22, of Monroe, police report.

There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Kramer for following too closely.

SUV Vs SUV

A two-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of Church Hill Road and The Boulevard at about 3:29 pm on September 17.

Motorist Derbena Zyskowski, 39, of Monroe was driving a 2005 Honda CR-V SUV southward on The Boulevard, as motorist Lily Beasley, 16, of Newtown was driving a 2006 Toyota Highlander SUV eastward on Church Hill Road, according to police.

The Toyota attempted to make a left turn to travel northward on The Boulevard as the Honda attempted to turn right to travel westward on Church Hill Road. The Honda then struck the Toyota, police report.

There were no injuries. Zyskowski received an infraction for making an improper turn.

DUI Warrant

State police report they received information at about 7 pm on September 17 that a man for whom they held an arrest warrant was in the Walmart store in Danbury, so they went there to find him.

State police arrested Richard Caruso, 46, of Brookfield on charges of driving under the influence, driving under suspension, following too closely, and possession of a controlled substance or less than one-half ounce of marijuana in connection with an April 3 incident in Newtown. State police processed the charges and then released Caruso on $1,000 nonsurety bail for an October 4 court appearance.

State police then turned over Caruso to Brookfield police, who wanted him in connection with a past incident.

Multiple Charges

Police report they stopped motorist Joseph Pollaro, 33, of Woodbridge, about 9:33 pm on September 17, near 51 Berkshire Road (Route 34), due to suspected motor vehicle violations.

After investigating, they charged Pollaro with misuse of marker plates, driving an unregistered vehicle, failure to have automotive insurance, and possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana. Police added that they charged passenger Tyler Murphy, 24, of Milford with possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana.

Police released Pollaro on a written promise to appear on September 27 in Connecticut Superior Court in Danbury.

Three Vehicles

Police report a three-vehicle collision near 117 Mount Pleasant Road in Hawleyville at about 3:42 pm on September 15.

Westbound motorist Blair Ayala, 18, of Brookfield, who was driving a 2007 Toyota Yaris compact car, stopped and was waiting to make a left turn to enter a property at 117 Mount Pleasant Road, after which westbound motorist David Damico, 33, of Bethel, who was driving a 2007 Dodge Ram pickup truck, struck the rear end of the Toyota. That impact pushed the Toyota into the eastbound lane, where it collided with an eastbound 2015 Mazda 3 auto driven by Anthony Rizzo, 61, of Danbury.

Ayala reported pain, but all three drivers refused hospital transport by the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, police said. Damico received an in infraction for traveling an unreasonable distance apart.
