Emily Carlson Rohleder Celebrates 90 Years

Emily Carlson Rohleder, a longtime resident of Newtown, recently celebrated her 90th birthday with friends and family in Southbury, where she now resides.

She grew up on Main Street, attended the Academy, and later graduated from The Hawley School. She was valedictorian of her class.

Mrs Rohleder and her late husband Stuart Rohleder, along with their daughters, Susan and Martha, and their son, John, were all members of Trinity Episcopal Church, where they sang in the choir. Mrs Rohleder played the organ on Sundays when the organist was on vacation. Her children graduated from Newtown High School.

She worked as a telephone operator on Main Street in the Holian Building. When that closed, she went on to the Danbury Telephone Company. She was later transferred from Danbury Telephone Company to Bridgeport, where she retired in 1975.

She moved to Miami, Fla., where she lived for eight years. When she moved back to Newtown, she lived with her sister, Sarah Casey, for three years before moving to Southbury, where she has lived since 1985.

Through the years, she has enjoyed visiting her daughter Susan Dayton in North Carolina, her daughter Martha Rohleder and her son John Rohleder in Lighthouse Point, Fla.

She enjoys her four grandchildren and her three great-grandchildren. Her fourth great-grandchild, due soon, will be her namesake, “Miss Emily.”
