Children’s Programs

*Drama Workshop with Leland Kellogg: Profesional actress Leland Kellogg will offer an extended drama workshop for ages 7-10 Saturday mornings beginning October 4 and ending on December 20 with a live performance. Sessions will run from 10 am to noon each week, and class size is limited to 15 participants.

Ms Kellogg and the class will decide from a variety of performance options depending on the composition of the group. A fee of $75 is due upon registration to reserve your space. Sign up in the children’s department by October 3.

*Magic School Bus Team Returning: Illustrator Bruce Degen and author Joanna Cole will be at the library, so mark your calendars. Mr Degen and Mrs Cole will be rolling into the library on Sunday, October 5, at 1 pm, to talk about their most recent collaboration:  Ms Frizzle’ Adventures: Medieval Castle.

Children ages 5 and up will enjoy hearing the team talk about the research that went into the writing and illustrations for this whimsical look at life in a medieval castle. After the slide presentation, the duo will be available to sign copies of their book. If you cannot attend on October 5, you can still purchase a copy of Medieval Castle in advance at the children’s desk and we will make sure your book is still signed and returned after the program.

 

Art Exhibits

Watercolors and pencil drawings by Joyce Pedersen and Marilyn White remain on display in the library’s lower meeting room through September 30 during regular library hours.

A new exhibition of art by the Newtown-based Gisela is opening at the library on Friday, October 3, and running through October 24. The show will offer a compilation of woks spanning the artist’s 25-year career including works in graphite, oil, pen and ink, marker and pastels.

The artist invites the public to her opening reception, which she has planned for Sunday, October 12, from 2 to 4 pm, in the meeting room.

 

Adult Programs

*Broadway and Beyond: On Friday, October 3, at 7 pm, actress Carole Scweid will give us the inside story on the historic hit Oklahoma! and bring the world of choreographer Agnes deMille back to life in an extraordinary performance presentation which includes song and dance.

This promises to be a fun evening celebrating The Great White Way. Refreshments will be served and seating is limited so please call the library today to reserve your place.

*Interviewing to Get Results: Wayne Szmyt will give a talk at the library on Tuesday, October 7, at 7 pm, on “Interviewing To Get Results.” Participants will learn interviewing strategies that will help them articulate who they are and what they are all about during an interactive workshop. Practice different interview styles through role play and get constructive feedback on what’s being done right and how to improve. Mr Szymt’s talk is free, but reservations are requested.

*Book Talks: It’s always interesting to discuss a book with a group, so come join one of the library’s ongoing book groups for some great conversation and lively discussion. New members are always welcome. Groups will be discussing a variety of great books in October including Wait Til Next Year by Doris Kearns Goodwin on Monday, October 7, at 1 pm; Anil’s Ghost by Michael Ondaatje on Monday, October 13, at 1 pm; and Atonement by Ian McEwan on Thursday, October 16, at 7:30 pm.

*The Life and Art of Frida Kahlo: We have scheduled two programs to celebrate the life and art of the celebrated artist Frida Kahlo.

On Thursday, October 9, at 7:30 pm, we will be screening the film Frida.  Then on Thursday, October 16, also at 7:30 pm, Heike Stucke will give a talk and slide show exploring “The Life and Art of Frida.” Call the library if you would like to attend either or both programs.

*Entertainment Books Are Here: The 2004 Entertainment Books, filled with discount coupons for area attractions, restaurants, etc, have arrived and are available for $22. You may also order books for other areas of the country. A great gift idea!

*PTA Activity Calendar: The 2003-004 PTA Activity calendar is on sale at the library for $10.  Full of school holidays, the half-day schedule, and many other important community events to keep in mind during the school year, these calendars are selling quickly.
