NHS Guidance Dept. Lists Available Scholarships

BARTON L. WELLER SCHOLARSHIP — For any senior year student attending Newtown, Joel Barlow, Masuk, Shelton, or Trumbull High School on a full-time basis. The award is $10,000 and you are required to complete a five-month original independent research or study project. Proposal must be postmarked by no later than midnight November 3, 2000. Proposals bearing later postmarks will not be opened. Further information is available from Mrs Gerry Waterbury in Guidance and the Career Center.

THE 2001 TOYOTA COMMUNITY SCHOLARS PROGRAM — For high school seniors with a grade point average of 3.0 or better, who are actively involved in service to the school/community and demonstrate leadership. Application must be returned to the Newtown High School Career Center by November 17, 2000. One student will be nominated from Newtown High School. The program awards 100 renewable scholarships, valued at $10,000 and $20,000 over four years.

NATIONAL ALLIANCE FOR SCHOLASTIC ACHIEVEMENT — For high school seniors across the nation demonstrating scholastic achievement by having a GPA of at least 2.75 at the time of application and who have completed the SAT or ACT test. Must be planning to attend a four-year college or university. Five awards are given ranging from $15,000 to $2,000 over four years. Application must be postmarked by March 5, 2001.

BIG Y SCHOLARSHIPS — Over 200 scholarships totaling more than $150,000 in awards for customers and employees. Big Y Scholarships recognize academic merit and achievement, and are awarded to the most academically outstanding students in the Big Y market area. They are available to high school seniors, undergraduates, graduates, community college, and non-traditional students. There are also special awards specifically targeted for dependents of law enforcement officials and firefighters. Application deadline is February 1, 2001.

RON BROWN SCHOLAR PROGRAM FOR AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS — For high school African-American seniors who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential, community service, and financial need. More information is available from the Web site at www.ronbrown.org. The postmark deadline for the application is January 9, 2001.

CONNECTICUT READY MIXED CONCRETE ASSOCIATION (NRMCA) — Is sponsoring the annual National High School Essay Contest that is open to students who are between the ages of 16 and 18 at the beginning of the 2000-2001 school year. The essay must relate to the concrete industry. The winner of the national contest will be flown to NRMCA’s 2001 convention in San Francisco in January. The winner will also receive a $5,000 scholarship to a school with a concrete-related curriculum. Entries must be postmarked by November 4, 2000.
