Memories Of Newtown

To the Editor:

Even though I left Newtown in 1962, I have many fond memories of the years I spent there from 1945 until 1962. We owned the Hawley Manor from 1945 to 1952. It has given me great pleasure to see the improvements that have been made by the new owners of the Inn. I was also in the real estate business, Newtown  Berkshire Realty, located first at the Wheeler Shopping Center and later out of my home/office on Appleblossom Lane.

I was reading today in my latest Bee (Way We Were, 1950) of the foundation being poured for the Wheeler Shopping Center. What a thrill it was then to have a Center which had an A&P, restaurant, drug store, beauty shop, and even a post office! I still have several friends in Newtown. I would probably still be living there except at 94, I find the winter weather too cold for “Little Old Ladies.”

What has prompted this letter, my son Ralph and I are still building and selling real estate. I am using your classified section. It has helped me in the years gone by – I’m sure it will again. I still have an active real estate license in Florida. Winters are still cold up north and we love “snowbirds,” hence the ad. Keep your wonderful Newtown press going!

As Ever,

Eloise Bowen Singer
