Households in Newtown returned their Census 2000 questionnaires at a higher rate than they did in 1990, according to final response rates released this week by the US Census Bureau. Newtown achieved a 77 percent response rate compared to 69 percent in 1990.
âOur special congratulations go to the people of Newtown who fulfilled their civic duty and returned their forms, as well as our Census 2000 partners who helped households understand that census data will impact the level of support we receive for our schools, hospitals, roads, and other essential services,â said Herbert Rosenthal, First Selectman.
Overall, the nation achieved a final Census 2000 response rate of 67 percent; 2 percentage points better than in 1990. This reverses a three-census decline in response rates. Connecticut achieved a final Census 2000 response rate of 70 percent; the state rate in 1990 was 71 percent.
The final response rates comprise the percentage of housing units that responded to the census by mail, phone, Internet, or used a âBe Countedâ form obtained from a census questionnaire assistance center. These rates update the âinitial response ratesâ last released in April
