Children’s Programs

Mother Daughter Book Club: The C.H. Booth Library is pleased to offer a series of Mother Daughter book discussions for girls in grades 3-4. The four-part series, “Power Talks II, Courage Under Fire,” begins with a discussion of the book Meet Molly: An American Girl. Multiple copies of the book are available in the children’s department. The program will take place on Wednesday, October 11, at 7 pm in the library meeting room. This program is co-sponsored by the Connecticut Humanities Council and the Friends of the Library. Pat Miniter, a 31-year veteran of New Haven school system, will lead the discussions.

First Author/Illustrator Visit: The Bruce Degan fund for visiting authors and illustrators will sponsor a program by author Stephanie Calmenson on Sunday, October 15, at 2 pm. The author of more than 50 books for children, including the popular Gator Girls series and Dinner At the Panda Palace, Ms Calmenson will present a funny and informative slide presentation, “A Day in the Life of a Children’s Book Writer.” Following the program Ms Calmenson will autograph copies of her books. (Available for purchase on the day of the presentation.)

 

Adult Programs

Yoga With Ricky Ayers: Yoga continues at the library with Ricky Ayers on Thursdays from 4:45-6 pm in the meeting room. Please call Ricky at 262-8721 to sign up for this program.

Protect Your Health and Your Wealth: Joan Bouchard, CLU and ChFC, will conduct an educational workshop on long-term care on Thursday, October 5, at 6 pm in the board room of the C.H. Booth Library. Come learn how you can avoid using property and personal savings to pay for long-term care. There is no fee for the workshop but you should call to reserve a seat and free workbook at 797-1203.

History of the Radio: The Newtown Historical Society is presenting a program on “The History of the Radio” on Tuesday, October 10, at 7:30 pm in the meeting room. The public is invited to attend and refreshments will be served.

Healthy Aging: The Family Counseling Center is sponsoring a workshop on October 12 on healthy aging in the new meeting room. The program will begin at 7 pm and is free and open to the public.     

Technology Topics with Bob Brand: A beginner’s class, “All About E-Mail,” will take place on Saturday, October 14, from 10 am to 12 pm in the meeting room. This class will review some Internet basics and then show you how to start using e-mail. There is no charge for this program, but signup is required at the circulation desk or by calling the library at 426-4533.

Mystery Lovers! The Friends of the Library are sponsoring an exciting new book discussion series, “Female Detectives: What Makes Them Different?” The series, which features four best-selling mysteries, will begin on Tuesday, September 26, at 7:30. The first book to be discussed will be Agatha Christie’s A Body in the Library. On October 10, All That Remains by Patricia Cornwell; October 24, Ill Wind by Nevada Barr, and on November 7, One for the Money by Janet Evanovich. A limited number of copies of all titles are available at the library. You can come to one discussion or all four. Please sign up at the circulation desk or by calling the library at 426-4533.

Book Discussion: On Thursday, October 19, at 7:30 pm the book group will meet to discuss Kate Chopin’s classic novel, The Awakening. Please join us for lively discussion.

Flagpole Photographers: The Flagpole Photographers Camera Club is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping photographers of all levels learn more about photography. Meetings feature guest speakers, monthly photo competitions, field trips, and workshops. At the October 19 meeting Richard Maggs will be the featured speaker. The monthly subject will be nature slides. The program is scheduled to begin at 7:30 pm in the meeting room.
