Two local organizations are planning events that will help residents who have been doing a lot of cleaning in recent months.

Paper shredding events are being planned for two Saturdays in October.

The first, on Saturday, October 3, will be hosted by the Ladies Auxiliary of Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company. Members of that group will be at the pavilion behind the fire company’s main station, 18-20 Riverside Road, from 9 am until noon. Social distancing will be in place, and volunteers will be wearing masks and gloves.

The event will be rain or shine.

A $10 donation is requested per file box or paper shopping bag; prices increase $5 per size according to container. Confidential files will be securely shredded on site.

For additional information visit facebook.com/sandyhookladiesaux.

In addition, the morning will also serve as an on-site collection time for the auxiliary’s clothing/recycling drive. The public is invited to donate gently used men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing and gently used stuffed animals during this time. The auxiliary will receive a donation for each pound of items turned in from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwestern Connecticut.

The clothing drive will continue all month. Those who cannot get items to the firehouse on October 3 are invited to visit the Big Brothers Big Sisters Helpsy donation site at 127 South Main Street. Donations will be accepted Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, between 10 am and 5 pm, through October 30.

For additional information about the clothing event, call 929-355-3660.

FONS Fundraiser

Friends of Newtown Seniors is also planning a paper shredding event this season.

On Saturday, October 17, from 9 am until noon, FONS volunteers will be at the Plaza South branch of Newtown Savings Bank, 266 South Main Street.

Cost is $10 per box, $5 for senior citizens. Like the Sandy Hook event, volunteers will unload boxes from vehicles and shredding will be done on site. The volunteers will have appropriate personal protective equipment.

For additional information contact FONS at 203-430-0633 or info@friendsofnewtownseniors.org.

The Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Ladies Auxiliary — including from left, Deb Aurelia Halstead, Sharon Doherty, Deb Moran, and Laurie Comerford — hope to see a line of cars next weekend leading to the pavilion behind the fire company’s main station. For three hours on October 3, the group will be hosting a fundraising paper shredding event. —Bee Photo, Hicks
