Alcohol/Drugs

Police report they conducted surveillance at various local package stores on Saturday, September 13, as part of their participation in the Stop Underage Drinking and Sales (SUDS) alcohol enforcement project.

Police said that at about 8:45 pm, they spotted a teenage male walk into the Rooster Wines & Liquors package store at 113 South Main Street.

Police said that the 17-year-old Newtown boy attempted to buy alcohol, but the store clerk would not sell it to him because the boy had no identification. The minimum legal age to buy alcohol in the state is 21.

Police said that their investigation also turned up some marijuana and drug paraphernalia within the vehicle in which the boy had traveled to the store. Police said they learned that a 16-year-old Newtown girl possessed those items.

Police said they charged the boy with illegal attempt to purchase alcohol.

The girl was charged with possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, police said.

Each of the two youths received a juvenile summons and each are scheduled to appear in Danbury Juvenile Court on September 29, according to police.

Because both youths charged are under age 18, police did not disclose their identities.

Berkshire Road Car vs Deer

Police report that at about 8:06 am on September 10, motorist Daniel Bandura, 69, of 2 Sweetbriar Lane, who was driving a 2003 Nissan Altima sedan eastward near 329 Berkshire Road, encountered a deer that had entered the roadway, resulting in a collision.

Bandura was not injured. Police took no enforcement.

South Main Accident

At about 1 pm on September 17, motorist Alice Troncone, 79, of Sanibel, Fla., who was driving a 2005 Mercedes-Benz E-500 sedan, was backing out of a driveway at 223 South Main Street and then struck motorist Sarah Weber, 23, of 21 John Beach Road, who was driving a 2006 Subaru Impreza in the northbound lane, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Troncone a written warning for a motor vehicle violation.

Truck Vs Truck

Trucker Kevin Barrett, 61, of 9 Little Brook Lane, who was driving a 2005 Sterling heating-fuel tanker truck eastward on Berkshire Road near Pole Bridge Road at about 2:46 pm on September 16, stopped suddenly for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by Raymond Steinle, 58, of North Haven, who was driving a 2012 Ford Econoline van, police report.

There were no injuries. Police report they verbally warned Steinle for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Traffic Violations

Police report that motorist Danilo Lliguicota, 45, of Bridgeport, who was driving westward on Glover Avenue about 8:13 pm on September 19, violated a red traffic signal when making a left turn onto southbound South Main Street.

Police stopped Lliguicota to investigate and then charged him with failure to obey a traffic control signal and with driving with a suspended license.

After processing, Lliguicota was released on $1,000 nonsurety bail for an October 7 court appearance, according to police.

Warrant

Police report that on September 20 they arrested Jacob Browning, 23, of 3 Cold Spring Road on a warrant, charging him with second-degree failure to appear in court in connection with a past incident. Browning was released on $500 bail for an October 1 court appearance, police said.

Two Warrants

On the afternoon of September 18, Newtown police arrested Jacqueline Kissack, 20, of the Riverside section of Sandy Hook, on a warrant, charging her with second-degree harassment in connection with a 2012 incident.

Police said they released her on $500 bail for an October 7 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Also, Newtown police charged Kissack on a warrant held by Torrington police which listed charges of second-degree failure to appear in court and third-degree criminal mischief. Kissack was released on $1,500 bail for an October 14 appearance in Bantam Superior Court on those charges.

Highway Accident

State police report a three-vehicle accident on eastbound Interstate 84, just west of the Exit 9 interchange in Hawleyville, about 3:47 pm on September 18.

In the incident, a 2009 Hyundai Accent driven by Bryan Ferencz, 40, of Waterbury, struck the rear end of a 2011 Subaru Legacy driven by Alexander Neves, 25, of Danbury, pushing the Subaru into the rear end of a 2008 Nissan Sentra driven by Joseph Adamo, 23, of New Milford, state police said.

Ferencz reported an injury, but he refused medical transport, state police said. Enforcement information was not available.

Interstate Crash

A two-vehicle accident occurred in Hawleyville on eastbound Interstate 84’s Exit 9 off-ramp about 5:22 pm on September 17.

As motorist Michael Binkita, 37, of Shelton, who was driving a 2002 Oldsmobile Aurora, was attempting to make a right turn from the end of the ramp onto southbound Hawleyville Road, the Oldsmobile was struck from behind by motorist Denise Anderson, 62, of Danbury, who was driving a 2012 Hyundai Accent, state police report.

All people involved in the accident refused medical attention, state police said. Enforcement information was not available.

I-84 Ramp Collision

At about 10:47 am on September 16, motorist Roman Mendieta, 22, no address given, who was driving a 1999 Nissan Sentra, lost control of the vehicle on eastbound Interstate 84’s Exit 10 on-ramp and then struck some guardcabling, state police said.

There were no injuries. Mendieta failed to maintain the proper lane, state police said.

Hawleyville Crash

Police report a two-vehicle accident about 10 am on September 22 in Hawleyville. The accident occurred near 131 Mt Pleasant Road.

The collision involved motorist Jay Gordon, 90, of Boynton Beach, Fla., who was driving a 2013 Lexus RX-350 SUV, and motorist Robert Huggler, 49, of Monroe, who was driving a 2006 Chevrolet K-2500 pickup truck, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Gordon a written warning for a vehicular violation.

Burglary/Larceny

 Police report that sometime during the early morning hours of September 19, someone cut a padlock on the door of a detached garage at a Hattertown Road residential property and then illegally entered the garage.

At the time, the residents of the property were asleep in a house, police said. The property is on Hattertown Road, near its intersection with Oak Ridge Drive, Hundred Acres Road, and Eden Hill Road.

The burglar stole a 16-inch Echo-brand chain saw, a block-tackle-pulley rigging system, and a Halo-brand hunting rangefinder, police said.

Police ask anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact them at the police station at 203-426-5841.

Church Hill Accident

A two-vehicle collision occurred near 64 Church Hill Road at about 1:19 pm on September 21.

Police said motorist Athena Wheaton, 19, of Sebastopol, Calif., was driving a 2014 Chrysler Town & Country minivan westward on Church Hill Road and was then attempting to make a left turn to enter a commercial driveway, as motorist Jeremy Doski, 17, of 33 Great Ring Road was driving a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am sedan eastward.

The two vehicles collided. There were no injuries. Police said they issued Wheaton a written warning for failure to grant the right of way.

Newtown Police, Hook & Ladder and Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps members all responded to a two-vehicle collision with injuries reported September 9 at 5:57 pm at 65 Church Hill Road, just west of its intersection with Commerce Road. Upon arrival police determined that Constant Gregoire, 17, was in the eastbound lane operating a 2002 Land Rover when she collided with the rear of a 1999 Jeep Cherokee being operated by Viola Walberg, 54, of Brookfield. Following an investigation, Gregoire was issued a written warning for following too  close. Police also  issued Walberg a verbal warning for failure to carry an insurance card. Both vehicles sustained minor damage but were drivable from the scene. All involved were checked at the scene for injuries, but no one was transported to the hospital.                                                                                                 
Police report that motorist Chung Me Maher, 55, of 128 Castle Hill Road, was driving a 2002 BMW X-5 SUV on Great Hill Road, near its intersection with Birch Hill Road, at about 8:24 am on September 21, when the vehicle drove off the right road shoulder and then struck a stone wall and a tree. The SUV came to rest on its roof on some turf alongside the road. Police said Maher was transported to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries. Hawleyville and Hook & Ladder volunteer firefighters responded to the incident. Police said Maher made a restricted turn.
