In an effort to provide community members a central location for details on the Sandy Hook Permanent Memorial Commission’s efforts, the panel has launched a website, SandyHookPermanentMemorial.com.

Commission Chairman Kyle Lyddy said the website will allow the community to keep an eye on the commission’s progress and be able to access public documents quickly and efficiently.

“Over the past few weeks, we have worked closely with web designers at Virtual Town Hall to get the site live in a timely fashion and are appreciative of their efforts,” Mr Lyddy said in a release.

In the coming months, Mr Lyddy said the community will have an opportunity to be part of the process that he said continues to evolve regarding the possible establishment of a permanent 12/14 memorial, or memorials.

“In the near future, our website will allow community members to easily understand when and how they can participate,” he added.

The website currently includes minutes of commission meetings, articles about the commission, and links to the commission’s social media accounts. The website will be updated regularly as the group of volunteers continues its work.

Information about the commission is also available on Facebook (SandyHookPermanentMemorial) and Twitter (@SHPermMemorial).

The commission consists of 12 Newtown residents, who were appointed by the Board of Selectmen in September 2013. The group was charged with making a recommendation on whether a permanent memorial should be created honoring the 26 lives lost on 12/14, and if so, what the nature, location, and funding of one would be.

According to Mr Lyddy, the commission will not make a decision on if a memorial should be recommended until sufficient information has been gathered from the community.

An initial Q&A document regarding the commission’s charge and related information has been published on the new website.

The next public meeting for the commission will be Thursday, October 9, at 7:30 pm, at Newtown Municipal Center. An agenda will be posted at least 24 hours prior to the meeting.

Commissioners are one step closer to a permanent memorial to honor those killed on 12/14 with the announcement this week that all future conversations will center on a piece of land within Fairfield Hills.
