Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multipurpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of the Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Walmart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

*An APPLE BAKING CONTEST will be conducted on Wednesday, September 30, at 1 pm with BINGO to follow.

*Join Tracy O’Neill from Colette Vacations on Thursday, October 1, at 1:30 pm, for a complete slideshow presentation on scheduled overnighters for next year: Sunny Portugal, April 9–18, Northern National Parks July 16–23, and South Pacific Wonders October 25–November 8.

*ANNUAL FLU SHOTS will be available on Tuesdays, October 6, 13, 20, and 27, from 9 am until noon. No appointment is necessary. Bring Medicare card. Pneumonia shot also available.

*Annual HARVEST BAZAAR will be Friday, October 23, 9 am to 4:30 pm, Saturday, October 24, 9 am to 3 pm, and Sunday, October 25, 9 am to noon. Contact Marilyn at 270-4310 to contribute in making items or baking for bake sale.

*SAVE THE DATE: Tuesday, December 8, Annual Christmas Party at The Waterview.

 

Day Trips

*Depart at 7 am on Wednesday, October 7, and board the M.V. Commander at West Haverstraw, N.Y., for a two-hour Hudson River Cruise to West Point. Enjoy lunch at Gasho of Japan with hibachi-style cooking right at your table. After lunch, tour and taste at Brotherhood Winery, America’s oldest winery. Cost is $76.

*Enjoy an OKTOBERFEST celebration at Platzl Brauhaus, Pomona, N.Y., which has been changed to Tuesday, October 29, with a family-style dinner, beer, soda or apple cider and dancing and singing along with the German band and dancers. Depart 8:30 am; cost is $80.

Overnight Trips

*UPCOMING TRIPS: Las Vegas on October 26–30 at Flamingo Hilton or Harrah’s, cost is $729, $100 deposit due upon signup. More information can be obtained at the center.

 

Recurring Activities

*YOGA classes are Monday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

*Billiards room; poker/card room; ping pong; and Wii bowling, golf, tennis, and baseball.

*Wii BOWLING, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.

*SCRAPBOOKING every Tuesday at 10 am.

*MAKE CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am with Mary Matern.

*Iris card folding CRAFT CLASS every Thursday at 2 pm.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE DAY on Tuesdays and Fridays at 2 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend.

Friday: AM mah jongg, Quilts of Valor, exercise class, PM Ecumenical Bible study group, knitting, movie.

 

Menu For Week Of

September 28–October 2

Monday: Taco bake (taco meat and shredded cheese) served over rice, chuck wagon blend, taco chips, peaches.

Tuesday: Italian wedding soup with crackers, grilled chicken Caesar salad with tomato, croutons and Caesar dressing, soft breadstick, pie.

Wednesday: Garlic parmesan encrusted cod with tartar sauce and lemon wedge or roast beef sandwich on wheat with mayonnaise, steak fries with ketchup, peas and carrots, wheat bread, lemon pudding with whipped topping.

Thursday: Oktoberfest: Bratwurst with red cabbage and apples, boiled potato, dinner roll, Black Forest cake.

And for planning ahead —

Monday: October 5: Shrimp and corn chowder, cold cut grinder with turkey, ham and cheese, lettuce, tomato, diet fruited Jell-O with whipped topping.

Tuesday: October 6: Cheese baked ziti, Italian sausage, fresh zucchini, parmesan cheese, Italian bread, seasonal fresh fruit.
