Nighthawk Swim Team Results

Newtown High School’s girls’ swim team kept things close but fell in a pair of meets to begin the season.

The Nighthawks dropped the season opener, 97-89 to always-dominant Pomperaug on September 16 and fell 98-86 to New Fairfield this past Monday. Despite the overall setbacks there were plenty of notable individual finishes for Newtown.

In the Pomperaug meet, Newtown earned first-place finishes in three events: Krysta Gates in the 500-yard freestyle (finishing in a time of 6:10.29); Megan Baylis in the 100 backstroke (1:17.73) and the 400 relay team of Maggie Atkinson, Carolyn Fagerholm, Kelsey McEvoy and Kelly Baylis which finished in 4:21.29.

In the meet with New Fairfield, McEvoy recorded Newtown’s only first-place finish, winning the 50 free in 28.06. The Nighthawks, despite only one first-place result, held close throughout the meet thanks to their depth. Newtown had eight second-place and 10 third-place finishes in the meet.

The Nighthawks will visit Weston on Friday, September 25 in their third straight road meet to start the year. Newtown will host Oxford next Friday, October 2, at 4 pm.
