BALTIMORE, MD. â The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) will host a free symposium, âDesign in the Social Context,â on Wednesday, October 17, at 6 pm.
Five nationally recognized designers will discuss the role of graphic design and how it is used to engage the public in a social context.
Dr Jason Loviglio, director of the Center for Media Studies at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will moderate the program featuring Sheila Levrant de Bretteville, chair of the Graduate School of Graphic Design at Yale; Chris Pullman, vice president of design for Bostonâs WGBH-TV; Mark Randall of WorldStudio Foundation; designer Sylvia Harris, and Wendy Brawer, founder of Green Map System.
The program on graphic design will explore its use in promoting public and social initiatives since the 1960s, the role it has played in influencing improvements in childhood and adult literacy, and how it has been used to effectively increase the publicâs understanding of social, environmental, and medical concerns on a global level.
The symposium is presented by the Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, in partnership with The Baltimore Museum of Art and the Friends of Modern and Contemporary Art.
