‘JANET SLOM: INSPIRED LINE’ AT ULLA SURLAND OCT. 13 w/1 cut

avv/gs set 9/25 #713553

FAIRFIELD, CONN. — Ulla Surland Gallery Eleven will present “Janet Slom: Inspired Line,” on view October 13–November 17. An opening reception will be October 20, from 6:30 to 9 pm.

Janet Slom was born in Rivonia, South Africa, where she grew up on a flower farm called “Shamballa.” Shamballa, the name of an ancient Tibetan philosophy that represents the common goodness in humankind, was an international study center of Eastern philosophy. Of her childhood and early inspiration, Slom recalls, “It was a flower farm, really beautiful; rows and rows of the most exquisite colors. I was drawing and painting since I can remember.”

Slom has won numerous international awards and commissions. She studied painting at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, in the United States at the Art Students League of New York City and Bennington College of Bennington, Vt.

She is represented by galleries in German, Italy and the United States. She has had numerous solo exhibitions.

She is a painter, a teacher, dancer and yoga instructor. All aspects of her life work together and influencing one another. One aspect of her paintings bring to life the color of an oil-slick rainbow or the translucent filmy skin of a child’s bubble blown into the wind in the moment just before it pops.

The gallery is at 11 Unquowa Road. For information, 203-259-1572.
