NEWTOWN 20, BROOKFIELD 0: Jake DeVellis hit Brian Reszoly with a 60-yard touchdown pass on the first play and the 89ers were off and running towards their fourth consecutive victory.
The defense shut down Brookfield with great plays by Andrew Matsis and Ben Collins and soon after Jamie Vavrek tossed a 20-yard scoring pass to Reszoly. Vavrek then ran in the extra point for a 14-0 Newtown lead. After Kyle and Connor McNamara turned in fine defensive plays, DeVellis was back on offense and scored Newtownâs third TD on a 60-yard scamper.
AJ Ritchie, David Hutchinson and Fletcher Travis all had strong carries throughout the game. Connor McNamara turned in a nifty 10-yard run after breaking numerous tackles. Charlie LoBosco had a nice run on a well-executed end around on the final play of the game.
JUNIOR PEE WEES
Â
BROOKFIELD 20, NEWTOWN 6: Although the Nighthawks took the lead in this game, 6-0, they were unable to hold off a strong Brookfield team.
Jared Modzelewski gave the âHawks good field position on the opening kick, bringing the ball out to the 40 yard line. Three plays later, Mark Scheunemann scored the touchdown that put Newtown ahead, 6-0.
Later, after great defensive plays by Sean Ryan, Zach Conger, Lucas Vendel, Kris Kling and Tom Jackman (a fumble recovery) halted one Brookfield drive, the Bobcats scored the go-ahead TD. Brookfield then intercepted the ball on Newtownâs next series of downs and ran the ball back for another touchdown. Tyler Tarantino and Justin McGrath got together to stop the extra point, but Brookfield held a 13-6 lead.
Tarantino and Scheunemann handled the running on the âHawks next series and also completed an option pass (Tarantino to Schuenemann), but it wasnât enough. Great defense by Conger, Cody Kellogg, and Daniel DeLaVega stopped Brookfield, though, and the half ended with the Bobcats holding on to their seven-point lead.
At the start of the second half, Brookfield rumbled on down the field and was on the verge of scoring another touchdown when the Nighthawks â led by Modzelewski, Vendel, and Jackman â put together a great goal line stand to keep the Bobcats out of the end zone. But the Newtown offense couldnât move the ball either and on a punt attempt, the ball was mishandled. Brookfield fell on the ball in the end zone for its third TD of the game and a 20-6 lead.
Despite some nice running by Tarantino and Scheunemann late in the game, the Nighthawks couldnât mount a serious challenge.
The Junior Pee Wees will travel to New Canaan on Saturday.

PEE WEES
Â
NEWTOWN 25, BROOKFIELD 0: Cody Shpunt and Thomas Hutchison scored their first touchdowns of the year and David Modzelewski snatched his first interception and the Pee Wees handled Brookfield quite nicely for their third shutout of the year.
The Nighthawk offense came out ready to play as Joey DeVellis completed a 20-yard pass to Ryan McGrath on the first play from scrimmage. Tucker Kass initiated the running game with a solid, seven-yard jaunt. Then Shpunt hauled in a 10-yard pass from DeVellis for the first TD of the game.
The extra point was no good, but Newtown was ahead 6-0.
The Brookfield offense struggled against the dominated Newtown defense. The first offensive series for the Bobcats failed to achieve a first down because of the efforts of defensive linemen Eric Dreher, Grant Speer, Steve Orrico, Joe Collins, Drew Adamek, Brian Stickles, McGrath and Brian Poeltl.
On their second offensive possession, the âHawks turned to the fullback, Hutchison, who stormed 25 yards through a huge hole opened by Mario Roehrs, Joe Bowen, Orrico, Shpunt, Ryan Martin, Collins and McGrath. Travis Speer and Scott Suhoza also ran well on that series.
Later, the Brookfield offense was stymied again. On the punt attempt, Modzelewski and Grant Speer found a path to the kicker and tackled him for a 10-yard loss. Newtown took over on the one and scored on the next play when Hutchison barreled through the line.
Again, the extra point was no good, but the âHawks led 12-0.
Tommy âRamboâ Gaboriault provided great field position for Newtown all day on his kickoffs and then watch as the defense of Adamek, Orrico, Hutchison, Bowen and Kass registered one huge tackle after another to shut Brookfield down.
In the second half, the defense shut Brookfield down again â thanks to tackle by Hutchison and Collins â and then the offense got right on the move. Kass carried the load on the series and rambled 22 yards for another Newtown touchdown. McGrath then found Kass open in the end zone for the two-point conversion and a 19-0 Newtown lead.
Special teams had a big day for the Nighthawks. Collins registered the special teams play of the day as he executed a strong tackle on the Nighthawk kickoff. The defense again dominated and prevented a Brookfield first down as Bowen came up with a behind-the-line tackle.
Soon after, Kass and DeVellis powered the ball downfield, perfectly executing a halfback option pass. Kass ran for 15 yards on one play while DeVellis found daylight on a sweep and charged 35 yards for the final touchdown of the game.
In the waning moments, Poeltl and Ken Cardelle came up with solid tackles and Modzelewski pulled down his first interception. The play of the game, however, goes to Matt Kuruc, who exemplified power football by dragging two would-be tackles on his back for the final five-yard gain of the day.

Â
NEWTOWN 27, BROOKFIELD 8: An interception by Jeff Levasseur on the first play of the game set the tone for Newtown in its win over Brookfield. Carey Olsen cashed in on that interception with a 65-yard touchdown run. Levasseur added the extra point to give Newtown a 7-0 lead.
Behind excellent blocks by Steven Greytah and Greg Gorden, Levasseur later ran 85 yards for another Newtown touchdown. Brookfield continued to struggle when it had the ball, thanks to the defensive work of Max Rojo, John Lewis and Marc Ingermann, who picked off a Brookfield pass.
Kevin Wasicki hit RJ Marus with a nice pass that set up another Newtown touchdown (Marus ran it in, with Levasseur adding the extra point) and in the second half Roy Scheuneman ran in for the Nighthawksâ last touchdown behind the strong push from the offensive line.
Brookfield added a late touchdown.
