After the first game was postponed by rain, Newtown High School’s boys’ soccer team played twice in as many days — and won both contests — to begin the season.

The Nighthawks went on the road and defeated Bunnell 2-1 on September 16. Luke Kellerman set up Johnny Celli in the first half and Adam Dissa assisted John Moxham in the second half

Newtown welcomed nonconference foe Naugatuck the next afternoon and won 2-0 at Blue & Gold Stadium. The Hawks mostly controlled play by creating turnovers in the middle of the field in a scoreless opening half. NHS got on the board twice in the second half with the same scorers who did the damage in game one. Gjin Abazi set up both net-finders — one by Celli and the other by Moxham.

The Nighthawks defeated visiting Weston 3-2 on September 20. The first Newtown goal was scored by Calvin Lucas on a header set up by Dissa. Alex Braholli netted the second goal, on a header that tied the game, and Connor Muir scored the decisive tally late in regulation. Abazi recorded his third assist of the campaign.
